An older Golota but one with focus and more mental fortitude than shown in his youth against the young undefeated contender in “Baby” Joe Mesi. Who takes this one? Does the more experienced Golota of the Byrd and Ruiz fights handle the up and coming Mesi, or does Buffalo’s 3rd Franchise edge out a win over a big name to advance his own career? I think this would have been a great fight in 2004 with plenty of action. Who’s your pick?
I'm taking Mesi. Joe had a nice little run until the injury he sustained against Jirov ended his career. He beat Izion, Touch of Sleep Willimason, Barrett and of course Jirov leading into 2004. Golota fought well against Byrd but came up short against Byrd, Ruiz and Brewster nearly knocked him dead. I think Joe's fast hands are the difference here. He was beating Jirov easily before he got caught in the 9th. It's a shame that he got injured. He had a lot of natural talent and probably would have won a title at heavyweight. I don't think he would have beaten either Klitschko but he certainly could beat all of the Don King guys from those days.
Golota started out as unstable goods, a bully and a thug with the requisite mentality, and after the Bowe fights he was a damaged version of those unstable goods. Mesi by Dec. with a KD to his credit.
Baby Joe had a hard time with Jirov, Golota at his best was a better fighter, if he kept his cool and keeps his punches up I think Golota would be too much for Mesi. I think it would be a great scrap though.
