The 159lbs Hagler who fought Leonard in April 1987 v the 152lbs 1991 Terry Norris who had 4 big wins that year including over Leonard,Curry and Castro. He had also unmercilessly beaten on John Mugabi the previous year. There's no catch weight they fight as they were. 159lbs Hagler v 152lbs Norris. Would Norris's fast reflexes ,skills and confidence upset Hagler. Would the suddenly slow and rusty Marvin give the kid the beating Leonard was supposed to? Ray had said before his fight ' people are like....but if you hit this kid'....presumably based on the Julian Jackson fiasco.
Marvin has 12 rounds to connect once. Odds are that he does. 91 Norris was fragile. It wouldn't be a beating as such. Not a protracted one, at least. But it wouldn't need to be.
Hagler is the better fighter but by 87', he wasn't. If Norris used his speed and athletic ability, he should win but with Norris, he could neglect defense from time to time which could spell disaster against Hagler. Prime for prime, Hagler would smash Norris but in 87', I don't like Marvin's legs and he would need them against Norris.
lose, imo Still not a good look considering SRL was coming off of a 3 year layoff due to a career ending injury (some might even say 5 year because Kevin Howard was a super bum) and going up 2 divisions for the bout what helps Hagler here is that Norris didn't have a particularly good chin and imo again his style doesn't help him, Hagler needs to land a good one only ONCE and then finish him for good, which is something he is, even at this current state, 100% capable of doing
Norris was out on his feet after a jab from Simon Brown. Norris would get poleaxed by any version of Hagler. 1 good hard right jab from Hagler would have Norris on bambi legs. Hagler by TKO within 6 rounds.
I've never been about to get it closer than 2 points. SRL by about 3 points is my norm. I've never understood how people score it for Hagler, but at the same time there's plenty of good posters and scorers that have it narrow for Hagler. Leonard had long since beaten the awkward Kalule to win a strap at 154. He also beat top 5 Middleweight contender in 1979 before he ever won the 147 title. While Leonard weighed 153 clothed, Geraldo was speculated to be as big as 165 in the ring. We knew Leonard could compete, and compete strongly, at 160, as far as divisions go. More than 2 years later Leonard, tho slower than he'd been against Hagler, gave Hearns a good fight then completely schooled Duran, who had just beaten Barkley. So tho he certainly wasn't peak 147 pound Ray, he could certainly still fight. He put as much as he could into the Hagler prep without having warm up bouts. Hagler was solidly faded, but he still chugged on thru the 12 rounds and was at times very dangerous. Agree, the Norris chin doesn't survive here. Norris boxed well in the Brown rematch, but it's a different matter boxing against the 160 pound southpaw Hagler. Norris was certainly not SRL slick. Hagler would get pretty aggressive too, because his boxing skills were eroding. It's a stoppage for Hagler. Picking the round is tough because of Terry's chin. It could be early, it might be later.
Norris gets absolutely mauled by Hagler. Any version, probably even a Hagler from the 2000s, which is the only one Norris would fight.
Folks are overrating or miss rembering 87' Hagler. Ray had been retired for three years and Hagler simple could not cut the ring off against him. Norris was a wrecking ball in the early 90's. He was faster, stronger and bigger than the Ray that beat 87' Hagler. Hagler is the better fighter no question but in 87' he was not the same guy. Norris had a run in 90' to 92' where he destroyed Mugabi, dominated Leonard, Curry, Taylor, Blocker, Castro etc.
I don't think it matters here. Hagler definitely was able to cut the ring on Leonard, as SRL spent an awful lot of the later half of that fight on the ropes - and not being able to cut the ring on Leonard isn't really a detriment imo. Leonard beat Hagler with ring IQ imo, without that, he'd have been stopped, or lost a clear decision, I think. Norris doesn't have that ring IQ and isn't as tough as Leonard anyway. I can't get the image of the Troy Waters fight from my mind - I think Hagler would find him and crack Norris' chin.
Norris outboxes him for a few rounds, but once Hagler starts connecting consistently around the mid fight, he drops him multiple times and stops him.
