A lot believe that George was struggling mentally which led to his struggles with Lyle, I don’t Cooney beats even this Foreman but would he be able to replicate Lyle’s success?
Foreman is a bad style matchup for Cooney in general, better extension on his punches, he can outjab Cooney, but he can also get the better of him on the inside, Cooney’s only chance is sneaking in a quick punch that Foreman doesn’t see coming.
Foreman is very rudimentary and not very good inside… who’d he ever outjab? I mean he probably wins but not for these reasons IMO.
He out jabbed Cooney himself, he out jabbed Briggs, he used the jab well to set up power punches against Norton and Frazier, though didn’t land many clean jabs in the latter 2 fights mentioned, but that’s because Frazier and Norton are good at avoiding jabs. Foreman certainly had a jab, and Cooney was more on the centre line and more straight up, and he also didn’t get great extension on his punches, whereas Foreman could.
He used his jab to set up power punches… “centre line” etc okay so what does any of that even properly mean? He threw a jab and afterwards threw some hard punches? That’s not “out jabbing” someone also everybody throws a jab before everything else 80% (made up stats) of the time because that’s boxing Cooney also threw his jab and then threw hard punches afterwards…. Like that’s not explaining anything, I think Foreman beats Cooney don’t get it twisted doe.
I think Foreman would be very heavily favored to KO Cooney. And Gerry didn’t have the chin to slug with George at point blank the way that Lyle did. Cooney’s only chance would be to try and box and jab using his height and reach but even then his chances are slim.
