He won the second fight, though.

And when, hype aside, there's actually a genuine argument for them as 2/3 or 2/4, it tells you even more...

As critical as I am of Fury, there's a double standard if we're referencing Wilder's condition (assumed washed, but possibly just outmatched) without pointing out Fury looked fresh off the sofa after a 6 month kebab binge...

I think you have looked at it pretty fairly
I would possibly swap some around but I doubt it would be too dissimilar

The question I have been wondering though is should Whyte and Wilder be swapped around?
Sure Wilder looks like he may well have been better and a more consistent puncher but having watched Wilder against Zhang and Parker, am wondering if he would have done as well as Whyte did
Consider Wilder won the WBC title the beginning of 2015
At the end of 2015 Whyte was fighting Joshua

Whyte then went on to beat
    D Allen
    D Chisora twice
    J Parker
    R Helenius
    L Browne
    A Povetkin
    O Rivas

Yes Whyte had the loss but that was arguably to a greater HW than anyone Wilder had beaten
Whytes resume if it was a HW champion defending against Parker, Rivas, Povetkin, Browne, wouldn't look bad at all

I wonder if Whyte should be rated higher than I first thought on Fury's opponents

Realistically yes - not just because the resume is much better and not defined by ducking, but because that tells you a lot about how good they each truly believed they were.

Wilder looked very dangerous against overwhelmingly non-dangerous opponents...

It's easier to look good against mediocre.

There's no arguably about it - Joshua was on a totally different level to Wilder himself and in a different universe to the hapless bums he typically fought.

It would look a heck of a lot more credible as a championship run than what Wilder actually did, with the highlight being a declined old hypejob in Ortiz.

The only argument for Wilder above Whyte is if you believe Povetkin had ruined Whyte's chin... And it's not indefensible by any means.

Heck, you could argue for Chisora over Wilder pretty credibly too - he was competitive with better guys than Wilder beat and quite possibly would've beaten him if they'd fought.

Wilder is the posterboy for manufactured mirages - there's no real substance there.

I think you can absolutely see it that way.

Boxing is part myth. You take a guy like Dempsey, who failed to fight not only Wills, but Langford, climbed out of the ring against Jeanette, etc. Or take Holmes who never in seven years fought a #1 or unified a belt, and in fact contributed to title proliferation by taking the IBF belt from the gutter...and look at the legends they are.

Of course they are better than Wilder, but the point is, you get a certain amount of points for checking boxes. Yes, the point could be made that Whyte has the better resume, but Wilder is going to be remembered for having ten "title defenses."

    In chronological order

    Wlad
    Wilder
    Wallin
    Whyte
    Chisora

I think the main lesson here is almost everyones going to have the same 5 people. His next 5 best opponents are Ngannou, Pianeta, Schwarz, Seferi, and Hammer.

For top 5 performances in chronological order I've got.

    Chisora II
    Schwarz?
    Wilder II
    Wilder III
    Whyte

McDermott won the first IMO, widely, but from what I remember Fury McDermott 2 was a really brutal, solid fight. Going to go rewatch that one now. Fury is also peak physical condition from what i've seen of him in that fight, almost has abs.
