Don King is behind this. Taking place in Miami on the undercard of Michael Hunter Jr. vs. Kubrat Pulev on October 4th if that match takes place. If legal motions filed by King are unsuccessful, however, and Hunter's bout with Jarrell Miller instead happens on September 11th, we could be getting Cobbs vs. Broner II as a main event (oh, joy...) Neither man has fought since June of last year, when Cobbs dropped Broner in the second round en route to a unanimous decision (that most fans saw as being a shutout but suspiciously close on the cards - worth noting that official judges John Rupert and Fernando Barbosa both have worked extensively on DKP cards in the past). That will be a 16 month layoff for both. Broner made headlines last week for a social media post in which he heaped adulation on Don King but says that he is broke and can't wait on a fight purse, so he is resorting to selling weed online (promising price-matching versus anyone's plug) to support himself and his 10 kids. He then made headlines again this morning for a misdemeanor arrest at an airport in Florida, released on one hundred dollars bail. I never cared for Broner, and Maidana's humbling of him ranks among the most satisfying boxing events I've witnessed in my life ...but, at this point, you've got to almost feel sorry for him. Somehow entangled in the web of a still-living and still-flimflamming Don King in the big 2025? Being fed to a mid prospect who already comprehensively whooped your ass, and is probably going to KO you in the rematch? All for peanuts, probably not even covering court fees? Oof.
I always liked Broner. He really blew his whole career by not staying at 135 but he likes to party too much for that. He never had any business fighting at WW and he actually blew all the big money fights he could have had at 135. He just turned 36. He could have been something special as an athletic brawler at 135. He really is as big of a waste of talent as I can remember. I remember seeing him one time use some footwork that looked amazing. 2 or 3 seconds worth, never to be seen again. No idea what the guy is going to do after boxing but it seems impossible this story has a happy ending.
Blair Cobbs is not a prospect, even though it seems like he is, hes 35, and a 12 year pro…. He has just failed to reach contender status. I kinda like the guy though, hes an entertainer in and outside the ring, and I dig the stone cold gimmick… Will be nice to see him beat Broner again.
"I'm still that *****, man. I'm on top. Cincinnati, stand up. West side." --Broner after his loss to Pacquiao. Now he's more like this guy... This content is protected
