Was HBO Boxing the best boxing television series ever?

I became a fan when being n HBO was truly special. When it was only fights like Benitez-Duran, Pryor-Arguello I, Gomez-Pintor, Benitez-Hearns, Hagler-Duran and Mancini-Chacon, along with the occasional miss (Leonard-Finch) were shown and boxing shows were few and in between, thus making fans feel like they were truly about to see a great fight, chosen for us by HBO management.

I think the quality of the fights suffered somewhat when they began signing boxers to exclusivity contracts thus giving us, say, Tyson-Green and other fights that were decisively not super fights, but then, apart from the Roy Jones Jr fights of the 90s, HBO did show some truly special moments of the sport during that era too.

Yes, I felt that way too. HBO seemed to be the "premier" boxing channel. When it was an HBO boxing night, it felt special compared to all the other networks. The intro music, the excitement, everything seemed more like it was a special event compared to the others.

HBO was the best because Harold Lederman had more charisma than any one person should be allowed to have. We all tuned in waiting for Harold to drop in with his knowledge.

Pretty sure everything you mentioned there in the ‘truly special’ part was PPV/Closed Circuit except for Mancini-Chacon. Those fights didn’t show on HBO until the following weekend. Either HBO owned the PPV/CC by bidding or they bid for the replay rights (sometimes for a stretch the big fights might air on ABC or occasionally CBS first and then also HBO).

I think Marvin Hagler was their first true house fighter where HBO signed a deal to show his fights exclusively, with also first refusal to handle whatever PPVs they could get out of it (sometimes CC … where people would pay to see them on a big screen in a theater or arena before more people had PPV technology to watch at home, which for a long time meant going to the cable company and picking up a special box and then returning it after) like MMH vs Hearns and Duran.

Probably yeah, but in Puerto RIco the concept of pay per view did not exist yet, not even for HBO fights. Technically it was Pay Per View in the sense that you paid 15 dollars a month (or 50, whatever, I cant remember and I didnt care really , I was a young kid) but you were getting all the non stop movies plus the fight so in the end it came out as free. An the fights were shown live as it happened, not days after.

There were times when a fight was shown on HBO and also the local channel at the same time! The local channels were great for non English speakers but those of us who spoke English benefited from the no commercials clause!

I much preferred HBO boxing in the 90s to Showtime.

I felt it was the best, I thought it would never end. It felt almost like losing a family member when it came to an end.

I actually liked the Fight Doctor, Bobby Czyz, and Albert. But I liked HBO better.

I liked the Tuesday night fights as well. It was a nice mid work week treat.i remember the time Tommy Hearns fought on it in 1994. I was over the moon!

I think thats when their budget got slashed. They switched the intro (that stupid truck) and round clock too which looked horrible and boring compared to the one they had before.
