This also lacks understanding of boxing history. Those guys struggled with the previous generation like any other. Cleveland lost to Satterfield, Machen and Jones to Harold Johnson, Chuvalo to Baker, Patterson to Maxim and so on. Anymore zingers?
Those guys were just starting out when they lost. Harold Johnson also beat Ezzard Charles right before he fought Marciano.
So if Bob Fitzimmons could train like today he could be instead of a wiry 169 lbs add 50 of muscle and be 219. He d blow Marciano out in 1 round right? You can’t make up what somebody would have been if their whole life had been different. You have no way of knowing how it would have turned out.
It’s arguable Charles beat Harold Johnson. One of the closest fights I’ve ever seen (what footage available). Johnson was also knocked down late in the fight and a mistake was made that could have went to Charles. Charles would go on to beat Satterfield who had beaten both Nino and Johnson
This content is protected was a close fight. Robbery would imply it was clearly one way. That’s just not the case. I could see it going either way.
Weight would have made Marciano slower, and negatively affected his stamina, it would not have made his reach longer, or him any taller or faster, nor would have made his skin any less susceptible to cuts. Holyfield,Usyk,Haye,Moorer,Spinks , had the height to carry the extra poundage , Marciano did not.
This is just not true. Steroids and weight lifting have proved this. How much weight could he gain is the real question.
So you would consider a 19 year old kid with 13 pro fights losing an iffy decision as a valid loss worth mentioning to try and bolster a point about one generation being better than another. Some of your points in this thread I agree with but Patterson losing to maxim isnt a great example
The point was that the 60s greats struggled with the 50s fighters just as much as any generation before them. The claim was that they were staggeringly more advanced. Of course this fight is worthy of note. Old lion young lion fights happen every decade. It’s usually not the biggest career defines but the point stands. 50s greats were no less great then any other era. I stand by that as does the results against future fighters. It’s not a knock on Patterson who had an excellent career.
Rocky is going to be in real trouble. The Washerwoman was one tough customer. Ali meant it is as a compliment because washerwomen were tough.
