He failed drug tests against Ruiz and, again, against Danny Batchelder, when he was banned from fighting for a year.

Deontay Wilder had 49 fights at heavyweight. Wilder went 44-4-1 with 43 knockouts. Wilder was the WBC heavyweight champion for five years and made 10 successful heavyweight title defenses, including a two-knockdown, successful defense against the undefeated Tyson Fury. He only lost to three men, Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

James Toney had 20 fights at heavyweight. Toney went 12-5-1 with 2 no contests. Toney lost to journeymen Jason Gaven and Charles Ellis, to Lucas Browne, and Sam Peter twice. He failed post-fight drug tests twice, after decisioning John Ruiz and journeyman Danny Batchelder. Toney was banned for a year after the second positive test.

Toney was the WBA champion for 12 days until his post-fight drug test was completed, which he failed.

Wilder and Toney faced TWO common opponents - Damon Reed and Jason Gavern. Wilder knocked Reed down twice and stopped him in two rounds. Wilder floored Gavern twice and stopped him in four. While Toney won a 10-round decision over Reed and lost a decision to Gavern.

In no realm was James Toney a better heavyweight.

"Wilder and Toney faced TWO common opponents"

Three: Matthew Greer was stopped by both in 2 rounds.
