168 seems extremely weak, for example: an arguably top 6ish guy in his last two fights went life and death with two guys who weren't even in the top 10 then actually lost to one of them. Then someone else who I believe is currently considered #2-3 depending on the sanctioning body looked pedestrian against one of those same not even top 10 guys. Not counting Canelo there's only one person in the division who may or may not be semi elite (and he looks kinda questionable as well). Then on top of it, a prospect from MW (which looks just as weak) came up after fleeing MW with a questionable draw and melted a (I don't know why but they were) top 10 ranked SMW who had just went 12 with the actual champion. Yeah SMW is quite weak.
Middleweight is the most weakest category for me. If we except Alimkhanuly & Carlos Adames the others are pretty ordinary. (And it's really bad because historically it's the Queen category in Boxing).
Let's break it on down! 160lb top 15 according to BoxRec.com Alimkhanuly Lara Eubank Adames McKenna Williams Zerafa Oliha Tukov Ngamissengue Tapia Czerkaszyn Kunimoto Volny Smith 168lb top 15 according to BoxRec.com Álvarez Sheeraz M'Billi Charlo Iglesias Munguía Pacheco Lele Sadjo Simpson Silyagin Plantic Martínez Nurmaganbet Zachenhuber Berlanga Ring Magazine top 10 at 160: Alimkhanuly Adames Lara Eubank (Y) Hernández Isley OIiha McKenna Williams Bentley Ring Magazine top 10 at 168: (Álvarez champ) M'Billi Iglesias Pacheco Reséndiz Plant Sheeraz Surace Scull Shishkin Melikuziev Really once you get past either division's top guy (Canelo and Janibek respectively), it's all just a bunch of mediocre dreck. 42 year old Lara with five bouts in the last six years has no business being top 5 (let alone 3 or 2) in any weight class.
Have people forgotten that Sheeraz broke his hand in the Adames fight? I think people have let the questionable cards in that fight flavour their opinion of Sheeraz. He is looking decent and will continue to improve for a couple years yet, its possible that he does take over the division post Canelo if he continues to get better.
Do you think that Crawford will stay at 168 if he beats Canelo? I'm sure that he will go down to 160 or 154 if Canelo beats him.
It's not good for your health to make your weight up and down like that. Roy Jones faced this problem when he went back from the HW. Division to the Light HW. one and he got his ass kicked.
