Patterson of Ingo 2 vs the Berbick of the Thomas fight. Could Patterson overcome the size difference or is Berbick too big and too strong?
I’d go with Patterson on points, Patterson would be able to light him up times, in close he’d tear him up with bodysuits, uppercuts etc, he’s far quicker. He’d close the distance quick and be able to take the slower Berbick by surprise also, beating him to the punch with well set up attacks.
I think Patterson can win a decision here. A knockout win isn’t impossible but Berbick was pretty durable. In his later years in the sport, Patterson outboxed Oscar Bonavena and was possibly robbed against Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Ellis. Berbick would be a tough fight though. As mentioned he was durable. He could go fifteen rounds. He had decent power. And he handled good boxers in Thomas, Tate and Page. Would likely be an entertaining match
I think Patterson could outbox him similar to how he did Chuvalo and Bonavena. I happen also to be in the camp that he was robbed vs Quarry and Ellis.
Agree. While Berbick had respectable power he wasn’t Sonny Liston. He could also be sluggish and inconsistent sometimes too. Patterson had much faster hands and feet. And enough sting in his shots to keep Berbick honest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Floyd get decked a time or too. But I think he wins enough of the rounds to pull it off
Very winnable fight for Patterson. It would be dangerous because Berbick was a durable, game opponent with an edge in size and strength, but Patterson is bringing so many things to the table that could frustrate Berbick. Specifically, his hand speed, ring IQ, timing, technique, and superior experience against just about any style. What Pat lacked in durability, he made up for it in heart and stamina almost always getting back up when he was floored and being able to pace himself for 15 rounds if necessary. Patterson has a few Rocky moments, but he gets the job done. He takes a clear decision in a pretty exciting match, 7 rounds to 5 or so.
Now, I'd typically bet for a Patterson decision with a couple deckings, either one or both ways when going against a good version of Berbick- But IMOJL specifies that it's Patterson from Ingo 2, and NOT the wiser, more defensively rounded version from the late 60s/early 70s. With that rule, all bets are off in my opinion. I do agree with most when saying that Trevor was inconsistent, but Berbick could pack a punch when he really put himself into it. He put the iron chinned Greg Page's ass on a turnbuckle, in addition to KOing John Tate, who otherwise had a pretty solid mandible. The best version of Berbick will have his chances against Floyd.
