He looked like **** against Munguia, Berlanga, Scull and Ryder. When I say **** I mean to his past standard. Let’s please not act like Crawford beat the Canelo from GGG 2 or Saunders/Plant. I think this Canelo would lost to the Plant he fought. Canelo is a fighter who ages terribly. He relies on reflexes and stamina. Throwing KO punches drains you. Usyk beat a prime Joshua twice with an actual massive size advantage while Crawford dwarfed Canelo. Fury dwarfed Usyk too though Fury wasn’t prime. I would say the second Fury win is much better than this version of Canelo. Here’s what I said in a diff thread I created before the fight: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/if-crawford-beats-canelo.738194/ “It’s a great win forsure but it comes with a lot of asterisks. 1. Canelo is not even close to what he was against Saunders and Plant. IMO that was his real prime. He has regressed significantly. The old Canelo would have smashed Scull. Even though Scull did not engage and ran, old Nelo finds and neutralizes him. 2. Canelo is a small SMW. At best he’s a MW. Even guys like Jannibek look much bigger than Canelo. Crawford on the other hand is a massive WW.” I’ll put Crawford over Inoue now and put him as 2 but Usyk rules boxing still.
How badly Munguia, Berlanga and Ryder got KOd 1-2 fights removed from the Canelo fight was very telling. Despite knockdowns he was never close to stopping any of them. Even Charlo who took a knee.
I agree, Usyk is number 1, but i cant sit there and downplay what Crawfords done last night. Regardless of how tailor made for Crawford this version of Canelo is. Still a remarkable feat. Deserves nothing but praise. He had no need to go up to 168. Chased greatness and accomplished it. We can still rank Usyk number 1 without diminishing Crawfords victory.
Yeah I just don’t want Canelos legacy to be tarnished. Anyone with a brain knows this isn’t the same Canelo at his peak.
One thing good that came out of Canelo losing is I know @IsaL and @ElCyclon are punching air still furious.
No, I had Bivol beating Beterbiev in the 2nd fight. Yes, Canelo loses to Crawford at any time. Canelo has never looked impressive against top level competition.
I think Canelo has been gradually slowing down since the second GGG fight where he hit his absolute zenith. Even against Plant he looked a bit lacklustre imo. He's been cutting off more and more aspects of his style over the years to accommodate to his ageing body and worsening gas tank to the point where he is a facsimile of the fighter he once was. People forget that Canelo used to be a very good back-foot fighter in his younger years on top of his counter-punching and pressure.
Just down to styles I don’t see any version of Canelo having an easy time with Crawford. Canelo has always been very beatable when you put him against an elite level boxer, who has great footwork, hand speed to beat him to the punch, and is a good ring general.
I said with sheer confidence, Crawford beats Canelo. I would not be as confident if it was 160lb, in his late 20s Canelo. Timing is everything. That version of Canelo stylistically could have been a issue for Bud, not to say Bud couldnt have done it because hes that great, but my God the task becomes 10x harder. The history books will forever show Crawford beating Canelo, so those who look in 50 years will only know that, they will only see footage of the fight. Luckily for Canelo, his legacy and resume will show he too was a All Time Great and that cant be taken away from him, those who obsess with Boxing in the future will have to make their own minds up when researching their careers and watching the footage back.
Yes, Canelo was past his prime. But a prime Canelo was never great. Remember a prime Canelo vacated his belt and flat out ducked a prime GGG. Could you imagine Hagler giving his belt to Golovkin and then fighting him after he declined?
Canelo was never an all time great but yes last night and for sometime he's been diminished. Crawford looked good, and the weight wasn't a big deal for him, I want to give him more credit than just a good win, but it's hard to with the way Max Kellerman was going so over the top last night. Trying so hard to sell the performance against a guy most people knew was over hill.
Its more the style of a prime Canelo for me that could offer a potentially different outcome to last nights fight. Not necessarily the level. I think when he used to punch in combinations, was much more active throughout the 12 rounds, i think that gives Bud alot more to deal with. Would not be surprised with the same result as last night though regardless of what version of Canelo, i just think for sure it would have been alot more challenging for Bud. He looked like he didnt have to get out of 2nd gear.
