Yep, and a Hall of Famer too! I'm glad he received that honor while he was alive. It meant alot to him.
any word on how Ricky died? I think most people think he probably took his own life, however it might have been something else. Has anything been mentioned at all?
are we ever going to be told "What happened with Ricky"... we all have a pretty good inclination, which may entirely be wrong, was it an accidental overdose, a slip & head injury, an internal thing, a reaction to meds or food even, I mean it could be a number of things outside the expected obvious. Why are they not saying anything? surely they appreciate after a few weeks, his admiring Public and the Boxing world need to know. GOD Bless you Ricky Hatton, rest in God's Mercy.
It'll come out eventually. Look at George Michael, seemed forever before they released his autopsy results.
it is a shame, I met him a couple of times and my son was a part of the 5 young fighters they were going to turn Pro during all of the Hatton troubles, managers, drugs, family and even Hatton TV for that 1 1/2 years just before the Pacquio fight. I think only 1 or 2 of those kids actually stayed longer for it too happen. Anyway it is a loss really, obviously for the actual Family and those closest to Ricky, but the more I think about it, it is quite sad really. God Bless them all, Rest in God's grace Ricky and thank you & Mathew & Lee Beard for the that year n a half with my Son. Gracias.
I heard something about his cause of death from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who knew Hatton. (I live quite near where he lived). Because of the specifics/method of how I heard he passed and also for respect/privacy reasons in general, I don’t think I should mention how it happened. What I heard may not even be true, but I did hear a rumour, and like I said, because of what I heard specifically, I don’t think I should mention it, not just that, but for respect/privacy reasons in general.
In case this question is more than rhetorical I will provide the obvious answer. They never incurred the brain damage in the ring that all the fighters who fought on their promotions did.
Of course, and keep it that way untill there is an official statement... people are just beginning to wonder while waiting to hear. God Bless his Soul.
I think we can safely assume it wasn't a basic health issue, like a heart attack. We'd have found that out quickly.
Never had time for him as a fighter after I watched the Tszyu bout - I did respect who he fought, his attitude and he himself as a man he once said “I wasn’t one of the best but I did fight the best…” bit modest for mine, at one time he was for a few movements one of the best boss him. Sad to see him go so young but he struggled with the drink - RIP Hatton and condolences to his clan, hope they take comfort in knowing he is a piece of history and achieved something as rare as winning the lottery off the back of his sweat.
If his family want to keep quiet about it, that's up to them. No-one else has the right to know anything.
overall a great & wonderful time, though 3 times my Son, Marcus was due for his Pro Debut, and the other 4 young fighters too, which for one reason or another broke down. Lee Beard's stepson and a young lad named Alfonso eventually did get a start but not for about a year or so after my Son left. After a year & a half working partime in the evening because the Hatton's Gym trained by day, living in digs full of hope & enthusiasm, he even had 2 stready girlfriends while there, one of them was particularly a lovely gal. But after 3 set backs, shitty jobs & digs, him and his roomate even got rolled by a few punks while living there and all the Hatton's problems then as I mentioned at the time, both internally & externally, it just never happened... He just pulled the plug and a couple of years later up rooted to NZ where he is today still. Tis life, sadly and all too common for most, set backs & busted hopes that send one down different roads, more often than not, for better outcome. Thank God. interesting connection to the Board here, when in NZ coincidently he joined & trained at the Gym Harry Otty worked at & helped run, crazy but cool all the same. here is a pic of Marcus with the boys after a Sparring session.
