I remember thinking at the time that Wilder Arreola was a strange fight I was expecting a big KO but it was pretty lacklustre from what I remember.

 

Not surprising. Wilder might have the most overrated power in the history of the sport.

 

Fighters are notorious for saying fighters who they performed well against were their best opponents, hardest punchers, etc…

Kinda like Floyd saying DeMarcus Corley hit the hardest of his opponents or Emanuel Augustus was his hardest fight….

He clarifies that that what he means is that Wilder generates his power with the extended right only, whereas Ruiz hit with good power in every punch.

He's right and I have been saying it as a fan for years. One of the first things a boxer is taught is to shorten the punches, and guys who can REALLY hit are the guys who generate power with those textbook punches, like Foreman.

But in all fairness, Wilder does generate more power with that completely extended punch than Ruiz does with anything he throws. And Arreola knows that.

 

He also said that Gassiev hits harder, and that was including Vitali ~

Deontay Wilder suffered a broken right hand AND a torn right bicep in his fight against Chris Arreola, and still stopped him in eight rounds.

Both injuries required surgery to repair.

It boggles my mind that nine years later this isn't lauded as one of the great wins.

Nine years later, some fans - who clearly don't know what they're talking about - bring up this fight like it wasn't a truly amazing victory by Wilder.

How is anyone still Unaware of this?

Name one heavyweight champion who won a heavyweight title fight by Ko with a broken hand?

Name one heavyweight champion who won a title fight by Ko in a fight where he had a torn bicep.

Can you even name one? Because Wilder scored a KO despite suffering both.

Heavyweights get praised if they overcome something as minor as a cut in a fight.

Wilder with a broken right hand and a torn right bicep STILL Hit hard enough to stop Arreola.

It shows not only how hard he hit but how he refused to quit despite suffering two major injuries in one fight.

 

Name another heavyweight champ who won a title fight by Ko with a broken right hand and a torn bicep?

Most people can't pick up a drink and hold it to their mouth with an arm with those two injuries.

Wilder was still bouncing shots off Arreola's head hard enough to stop him.

Arreola would've won the heavyweight title that night if he was fighting anyone else with those injuries.

Tons of name heavyweights and all timers quit with far less significant injuries.

Vitali smashed the **** outta Areola.

 

Parker also said that Ruiz is the hardest puncher that he has ever faced. That's why when we have this hardest puncerh conversation we have to define what we mean by "hardest" and take care when using fighter's quotes as evidence.

In context I think Parker meant that he felt Ruiz's shots a lot more than against guys like Joshua, Wilder or Zhang. As in they hurt when they landed.

There is no universal meaning of "hardest puncher" that is beamed into everyone's heads so they we are automatically all on the same page. It could mean touch of death one punch KO power, it could mean heavy thumping shots that a fighter feels through their whole body, it could mean how much it hurts when it lands etc.
