' Francesca Hennessy will fight former atomweight world champion Fabiana Bytyqi in a bantamweight bout on Saturday 25 October in Derby, live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer. ' And so it begins. I'm expecting one of the 4 Boxxer/BBC fight nights to be women only headed by Lauren Price in ' World Title Action.' Then the dire ratings from that show or future shows after casuals have watched 20 minutes of power free missing will lead to the contract not being renewed. ( Just looking ahead, that's all )
I think someone on here said the negativity towards the BBC/Boxxer deal was disappointing but I think this is why I was. Just you knew it would be dross, Clarke vs TKV also has a huge chance of being a total borefest
I was one of the main ones who mentioned this so am happy to speak up. I stand by what I said then. I think there's a big difference between raging cynicism and a fair assessment. The raging cynicism in that thread when I posted was in my view unfair and unwarranted. Stuff about "how the mighty have fallen", "stay of execution", and from yourself there was "BBC having a photo of a female boxer is probably a guide to what to expect." I felt that was unfair based on the evidence we had at the time, and wanted to add a bit of balance. I thought and still think that having boxing on a truly mainstream free-to-air platform is huge. Not trying to gaslight people into thinking this is a blockbuster. It isn't. Clarke vs TKV I agree with you could be a stinker. That said, it was ordered by the Board for the British title, and neither fighter was going to turn it down. Just hope they do the belt justice and give the audience a good show. I'll be tuned in because Parker vs Wardley is no way a PPV show and I'll happily catch up with those highlights in the days afterwards. Very happy to eat humble pie if the next BBC card is mostly British Woman vs Random Latvian Waitress for a vacant belt.
We can definitely see that the BBC is having its say on these cards or at least the order of these cards. As only the BBC can produce shows purely with a political purpose behind them and not care about ratings. No one is putting two random women as a headliner when you have Fraser Clarke fighting against a fairly decent opponent. Never heard of either of these two female boxers, do not even care enough about either of them to put them in google. Also yet to meet a single boxing fan in real life who has talked about watching a woman's boxing match or who enjoys it. The only time you see anyone say they like it is when they are gobbing off online, no doubt trolling to get a reaction. Poor form from the BBC yet again.
If there was ever a fighter to dim the viewership it's Fran Hennessy - ultra confident to the point of arrogance. 0 power just dull to watch. Put some action packed fights around her and it could be decent for women's boxing but there's a risk she's no Taylor
You can’t ‘definitely’ see that at all. Could just as easily hypothesise that the shows are running on a lower budget than on Sky, so Shalom needs a smaller undercard and cheaper female fighters. Or that he’s just carrying on his positioning from the Sky days of showcasing women and non-white male boxers prominently. Could be any of those things and more. I doubt the BBC are that bothered, given the apparently low amount they’re paying. I’d imagine they’d be happy with any sort of viewing figures that attracts a different demographic to the Strictly Come Dancing audience in what would normally be an absolute dead spot for them opposite it. it was obvious what the edict from Sky was for Boxxer and Shalom, but it’s far too soon to be saying that about this deal yet.
