Would you watch a movie about Tito Trinidad?

I mean he had it all basically...

He was like a teen idol in Puerto Rico and more, he was a national hero and he had all the pressure and trappings of fame.

He had that dramatic win over De la Hoya and the fall from the top against Hopkins ..his win over Mayorga, while not spectacular to us better knowledge boxing fans, could be used by Hollywood as a Hollywood-ending to the untrained eye.

It sounds like someone can make a movie about his life to me.

 

I would love to watch a documentary about Tito. He was a great fighter. But, I don't think there is enough to his story to make a movie about him.

 

No… I don’t think his life is very interesting? Most boxers are basically just athletes like any other, I don’t want to watch a successful, professional athlete go about business in a movie with very little drama… Raging Bull succeeded and so did Rocky for what was going on outside the ring, the human story. I am a huge Marciano fan but can you imagine a movie where a guy just trains hard and is a good family man? Wholesome but very boring.

 

Battling Siki’s could be fun if they went the Raging Bull route and kept his war crimes and eccentricity.

 

The Rocky Marciano Movie was indeed very boring.

I've noticed the best boxing films have the least amount of actual boxing in them. Requiem for a Heavyweight has almost none and Raging Bull didn't feature them prominently either.

I think if you want a dramatic life story about a boxer,try reading about Johnny Tapia or Fabrice Benichou.

 

Biopics in general are atrocious because they all are molded unnaturally to fit the heros journey.

Trinidads story fits the "Hollywood" mold much worse then Tyson and Ali. With Tyson and Ali you've got no shortages of challenge to focus a script on but Trinidad was undefeated before the Hopkins fight and his career ended early.

Hollywood is incapable of telling a story where theres no villians or crisis that needs to be overcome. They just can't do it.

 

I feel if they went this route they'd end up making a bigger deal out of the Mayorga fight then it was. Mayorga is not final villian material. Trying to make him one would raise eyebrows.

 

Hollywood , if they want to change the world and make it a better place-and unlike many, I think some people there really do-has to make stories where A) the good guys win or B) someone overcomes some incredible odds.

The only movie I remember where the bad guy wins is Arlington Road.

The bad side of that is that everyone knows from the start who will win. But we want to know HOW it happens.

And this is what most people here mean: boxing movies are too formulaic, specially when we, the boxing fans, know the story already!

 

I love boxing but, despite best efforts, I don’t know that it’s an inherently great subject matter for movie treatment.

I don’t follow baseball seriously but that’s a sport that always holds great potential as a subject matter and associated context in movies. Lots of great movies made re that sporting genre.

Having said all this, if there was one fighter’s story with a truly compelling story to be told blended in with his boxing career, it would be that of Jack Johnson imo.

I saw The Great White Hope some time back but I wasn’t overly impressed with it.

A younger Samuel L Jackson would’ve been THE man to play Jack, imo.

Maybe he still could if they give him a bit of the old CGI treatment for the earlier days.
