It was filled to the brim with real sized, modern heavies, most with extensive amateur backgrounds. It had athletes not dockhands, cobblers and breadline dreamers. Tucker, Dokes, Thomas, Berbick, Holmes, Bruno, Tubbs, Page, Weaver, Witherspoon, Smith, Coetzee, Douglas, Ruddock... Studs.
Exactly my point. Most of them are bums. Boxing wasn't global then, it was practically a domestic american sport. Mike Tyson never faced a single Russian, Ukrainian or Cuban in his entire pro career for example.
As a Caucasian with no ethnic dog in the fight,so to speak, I always loved the Mexico vs Puerto Rico boxing rivalry from afar. I never of course lived it and never once considered that Puerto Ricans and Mexicans hated each other or were fighting some proxy war out with their ring heroes — more like (to me) ‘I have pride in my country and this fighter represents my country and he’s going to beat your guy’ was how I perceived it. And it has produced some really good fights over the years. Not always, but most often it’s the aggressive Mexican slugger vs the smoother Puerto Rican boxer (although for sure there were punchers on both sides of the equation, and not every boxer fit the mold of the ‘stereotype’ style associated with his country). But as I said, I never lived it from your perspective as an ethnic/native member of either. And I appreciate your sharing what it’s like on a more personal level. I have just always loved how many great fights came out of it. Also, on a less serious note, whether it was a typo or pet nickname, I’m leaning toward referring to Hector Camacho as Machi going forward, haha.
Disagree on two counts. I dont for a second believe Duran juiced or Hagler for that matter. As far as Hagler v Antuofermo 1 if you turn the volume off for the main reason Cosell was Vitos cheerleader I clearly saw Hagler win that fight cleanly and decisively. Just my opinion
He's probably a troll and a hater, at best a complete ignoramus, so what's the point of arguing with him? It's pointless, don't waste your time, my friend. Don't feed the troll
How about Duran was completely outclassed by Leonard in the rematch ... the fight was competitive even with a subpar Duran and then Roberto lost his marbles and quit ...
Another vote for the “you have to take the title” thing which has been rolled out by so many announcers that there are fans who think it’s genuine scoring criteria. It isn’t. Another one which harks back to my early days as a fan, reading boxing magazines. I loved them, but on reflection, they were written by journalists who weren’t so much focused on reporting on fights as much as trying to create narratives around the fights and fighters careers that I’m not convinced actually exist. It’s like a hangover from wrestling and promotional gimmicks. That one struck me when I was watching Stallone talk about making Rocky IV, and said something to the effect of “we have to make a story, some drama, in and out of the ring otherwise it’s just two people punching each other”. I think it’s true of real life boxing as well, and how the media have handled it. So the bit that has me cringe now is whenever they roll out lines about “quests for redemption”, “this time it’s personal” etc
Duran admitted to taking a substance used for horses the most common of that category is the steroid “Winstrol” to quote Duran from a bio: “They gave me this injection to get stronger and faster....an injection that they give to horses....." it’s from the book by Christian Giudice - That’s just read what I read brother.
