    Brooklyn vs. Brockton...

The classic dull blue ring with a random sponsor... (in this cast Iveco Turbostar, an Italian truck manufacturer...of course the most iconic was Budweiser)

    Harold Lederman scoring judging...

    Artur Mercante Sr. reffing...

    A different time.

Ironically, despite lasting over thrice as long in their 1981 encounter, the Syrian would win his only official point on the judges' cards in the '84 rematch - earning the 1st from New Jersey judges Vincent Rainone and Eva Shain.

Difference in class, obviously, but walk-in mauler Mustafa was all wrong for a precision puncher like Marvin — he chewed up Hamsho on the inside and obviously had his way whenever they were at range. Both times.

The 81 Hagler from the first fight was much nearer to a peak Hagler than the 85 Hagler, who was slipping by this stage. But the 85 Hagler blows him away, go figure.

I went to the second fight and sat next to Bert Sugar who was there with his date Vicki LaMotta and told me about his new book coming out. Something about the greatest champions. As for the fight it was a wipeout no contest. And Hamsho was a good fighter. His best performance was when he beat Benitez inspired by the death of Patty Flood.
