Trinidad is the better and greater fighter in a P4P sense, but McClellan is a horrible match-up for him at 160. Gerald is simply too big and powerful, and too fast a starter. McClellan inside of 4.
Trinidad is on of my all-time favourites, he was an absolute fighting machine. He was naturally such a slender guy though, 154 was his best weight. Hopkins' frame was 2 divisions bigger than his. McClellan was one of the biggest 160 pounders I've ever seen, he never makes that weight in the day-of-the-fight weigh-in era. The weight difference in the ring would be easily 20 pounds. I'd be praying for the fight to see the second half, where Trinidad would really start to put a hiding on McClellan, but it's pretty short odds on an early win for the American.
A very dangerous fight for Trinidad. Though he was a much better fighter than the much overrated McCellan, he was clearly diminished by the time he moved up to Middleweight. This fight falls along the same line as McClellans victories over the clearly past prime versions of Mugabi and Jackson he receives so much credit for. ( Something I never understood. ) McCellan , who normally would weigh as much as a Super Middle/ Lt.Heavy on fight night would overwhelm and stop Trinidad early. And it should be ranked along the same lines as his victories over Jackson and Mugabi. Or no big deal, and expected........
Im glad the G-Man wasn't fighting at Middleweight when Trinidad moved to 160. Not a good matchup for Trinidad. McCellan was so good im not sure he was a good matchup for anyone. He had a prime Roy concerned. We don't totally know how good Gerald was. If he hadn't of had his injury and his career continued on a normal path if someone told me he would go on to be in the GOAT conversation I wouldn't argue with them. He checked all the boxes for greatness. He was mean, really mean. McCellan once said in an interview that hitting a man square and knocking them out was better than sex. This was a sick maniac.
