"Farito" is a late sub (I think like, same day) for Chihuas' originally scheduled opponent, Raúl Alejandro "El Tocherito" Rubio Pereyda.

Rubio is 19-4-1. Faro Zúniga is definitely a step down - 17-11.

And yes, Chihuas Rodríguez is the interim WBC flyweight champ. No clue what he's doing in a random eight-round non-title tune-up which isn't even listed on BoxRec.

It's an officially sanctioned bout, though - Azteca showed a graphic with both of their pro records during intros.

 

Round 1

Rodríguez hurling overhand rights coming forward. Faro responds in kind and backs Rodríguez nearly into the ropes. They're just taking turns jabbing each other in the face sallying forth while tall & upright, or crouching and stalking with overhand rights. Rodríguez starts to assert himself past the midway mark of the round with combos on the body. Faro is hurt by a stray right up top while in retreat, but I'm not sure Rodríguez noticed how badly. Rodríguez keeps banging the body. Faro's mouth gaping open. Faro eats a flurry on the head and dives in low to clinch around Rodríguez 's waist.

Round 2

Rodríguez belting Faro with rights up top. Faro picking off what he can and spearing down into the belt line of Rodríguez with both hands. Faro keeps hiking up his trunks, pinching the hem between his thumb and knuckle pads, needs to watch out doing that so close in Rodríguez's firing range. Rodríguez with some body shots and Faro clinches. BIG left hook up top by Rodríguez, now one downstairs, then an overhand right on the temple and Faro crumbles by the ropes. Faro on his elbows and knees, forehead pressed into the canvas, looks like he's doing yoga. They show a replay and it looks like Rodríguez caught him south of the border with a hook. That's what caused Faro to go down. He's in a lot of pain. Ref giving him a minute. He is shaking it off, bending over to touch his toes, and we've got time in. Rodríguez jumps on him. A bunch of body shots. Faro flurrying madly to defend himself. A minute left on the round clock. MASSIVE series of rapid light hooks with both hands by Rodríguez into either side of Faro's face. Faro getting abused on the ropes, ref steps in and waves it off as Rodríguez is teeing off with unanswered hooks ripped to body and head.

Chihuas improves to 41-6-1 (28) in his homecoming. His last bout in Monterrey was in January of 2022 - ten months before the Natakani loss but four months after the Ioka loss.

Orlando Aaron Barajas Tirado vs. Tómas Heriberto Mendoza Valenzuela, 8 rounds @ welterweight

 

Orlando "Golden Boy" Barajas is 18 years old, with an 8-1 record. He was originally supposed to face Diego López Juárez (5-5-1) on a different card tonight in Guadalupe - another city in the same Mexican state of Nuevo León as Monterrey.

Tómas "Tommy Kun" Mendoza is 22, and actually quite a daunting step up in class for a late replacement - he's 11-2 with seven kayos.

 

Mendoza is the southpaw in red trunks with white trim and white waistband, with red shoes. Barajas has the white shoes and Mexican flag gear.

 

Pretty decent scrap here. Crowd is quiet - think a lot of people left after Chihuas, and the locals don't have a rooting interest here. Both men are outsiders. "Golden Boy" Barajas is from Ciudad de México in Distrito Federal, and "Tommy Kun" Mendoza is from Mexicali in Baja California.

 

Neither of these kids is actually rated at welter.

BoxRec has Barajas ranked #44 in Mexico and #301 in the world at 140lbs, and Mendoza twentieth in Mexico and 197th in the world at lightweight.
