Prime Bonavena replaces Galento against Louis in 1939. Could the heavyweight champion of South America become heavyweight champion of the world?

Louis would do what I saw not really anybody do? And that was conclusively shut Bonavena down, Louis was such a boxer and he’d KO him in about 4-6 rds, Louis’s hook is far shorter and more powerful then either Ali or Fraziers… Oscar would make it odd looking till he was turned into paste not overly intelligent of a fighter but he was an opportunist in the moment? He didn’t hesitate,I can’t phrase it any other way. JL is too savvy for OB to impress even in a loss.

In the sixth round Louis lands a flurry of lefts and rights to the head. The canvas rises and upends Oscar. That's the last thing he remembers.

Bonavena had a great chin, but major defensive liabilities.
There's quite few easier ways of making a living than
stepping into a boxing with the greatest offensive heavy
in history with those glaring weaknesses .
Joe Louis would turn Bonavena's face into ground
    beef before it's over.
Giving the ref no choice but to stop the massacre
    with-in 8-9 rds.

What is the point of these threads? This is such an obvious match up, it doesn’t warrant a thread.

    Hi Buddy.
Of course it's to get peoples opinions, and that's good, but matchups like this don't offer opinions, there is no questions as to who will win, a more pertinent thread might be how long Oscar would last, and there has been a tendency of late to again put up obvious winners in fantasy fights, I don't think it stretches anyone's imagination like say, Leonard v Robinson, or Ali v Louis, Greb v Monzon, where by the outcome isn't so certain, and the forum gets to see other members, thoughts and breakdowns, I have had my mind changed many times on who I think would win, by the informative opinions of our posters, it makes for good reading, so I am with Swag to a degree, how long before we see who wins Marciano or Wilde, I jest of course but... , no offence meant.
    stay safe buddy, chat soon.
    Mike.

Bonavena may not deck Louis like Galento but would put up a better fight. As ponderous as he was he had some ability to stay away and box carefully. He also was strong and rugged. I think he would last probably 7 or 8 rounds but run into too many power punches and finally a devastating combo.

    Louis stops a tough Bonavena.

Bonavena was unorthodox in the way he attacked as well (as was Galento) so maybe he could land something to drop Louis, but I believe Louis, for the most part, controls him with the jab and is able to time Bonavena as he rushes in, and he stops him as he wilts late on.

Louis by decision. Ringo was a tough out. Ask the late Joe Frazier.
