Hypothetical… sure! And so is pound for pound rankings at the end of the day. But it’s still rankings and whichever fighters gets the majority of the opinions ranks higher. And Vitali proved it against a still dangerous Sam Peter after a 5 year layoff. Also against Lennox Lewis forcing him into retirement. Also against a still dangerous roided out of his mind Briggs… want to know anymore?? Google and Box Rec are your buddies
I could receive his record by heart. Peter is one of the five worst titlists of all times. His power and chin are ovrerrated, and those were his only good qualities. Briggs is a guy who loses to Sedrick Fields. Sanders hot and cold--mad talent but didn't train. Hide? Adamek? Gomez? Norris? Cruisers. Solis? Kingpin Johnson?
I don't think so. It's true that Wladimir lost more fights than Fury, and some of them really badly, but the Ukrainian had a nine-year reign as heavyweight world champion (in addition to his three-year reign as WBO champion, from 2000 to 2003), defended the world title many more times than Fury, and I don't think he defeated fighters inferior to those defeated by the Gipsy King. If Fury hadn't had limitations and mental problems, he could have achieved more, and then perhaps I'd have a different opinion. Fury won the world title in 2015 and never defended that belt. He became world champion again in 2020, five years later, while the Englishman was out of the top for five years. It's a shame because Fury had the ability to dominate the heavyweights for years, at least until Usyk arrived.
The issue is the quality of opponent Vitali is facing. Yes, these men count on a resume, but not that much, just as Huck and Bellew are not going to count as much as Fury and Joshua.
This is my opinion also. Fury achieved a lot, but compared to his size and talent he was a failure. A guy like him should have dominated the division for years, but he did not have the mental fortitude or determination.
It's like comparing Larry Holmes to Riddick Bowe. Holmes didn't have many outstanding A level wins, but he had a lengthy reign taking out many good contenders and future champions. Bowe's resume is top heavy with a handful of very good wins, but then the rest of his resume is pretty disappointing stuff. Like Bowe, Fury also missed several of the best fighters from his era. I would take Wladmir's resume over Fury's just as many reasonable would take Holmes over Bowe. Even if Bowe hypothetically beat an Older Holmes, that wouldn't really change anything.
