He had talent. Any hard-punching 6-2 middleweight will cause problems, like above posters said he was manufactured, but he was probably better than, say, a Peter Quillin.

He was a good Super Middleweight. Pretty good win to go on the road and beat Park by KO. I wish his scheduled fight with Hearns would have came off in 1988.

Plus I think it's fun to say his name.

Extremely tough middleweight who left the game with a good record and was in some decent scraps. Became a super middle champ briefly too. Wish he was talked about more.

I came into this thread specifically to make this joke only to realize I'd beaten myself to the punch by over a decade. :ohno

Let me clarify something: the WBA was not based in Venezuela yet, it was based in Panama.

But Gilberto Mendoza, the WBA President, was Venezuelan-Panamanian.

The WBA moved to Venezuela in the 1990s but returned to Panama in 2007.

But here is the more interesting situation: There was a very famous Venezuelan promoter named Rafito Cedeno who worked with the WBA and WBC during that era. he had been promoting fights from 1960 all the way to 1981. I wonder if Obel was promoted by Cedeno early on in his career.

Regardless, Obelmejias had tremendous power. I dont care if they were all tomato cans, to ko 28 out of your first 30 opponents, you have to have power. He was also courageous.

He was flawed compared to the 5 kings but who outside that elite group was not? I think he'd beat the 1984 and later version of Wilfred Benitez because I mean, almost all top level middleweights that Benitez faced did at that era except perhaps for Kevin Moley, and he had a chance of landing one of those ko punches on Thomas Hearns like Iran Barkley did. Generally speaking, through, he was not on their level.

I thought he was fun to watch,

That was just part of Marvin’s makeup. He motivated himself by finding some kind of grudge or hate factor for every opponent to make himself train harder and fight better/harder.

If Marv fought Mother Teresa, he’d find something to not like about her.

“She’s a fraud. She’s not my mother. In fact, she doesn’t have any children at all. Parading around like she’s a mother when she doesn’t have kids makes me want to punch her in the face. Not to mention, she has no sense of fashion and she hasn’t fought anybody — the Catholic Church was putting a spotlight on her while I was toiling for $50 a round in club fights. **** that *****!”
