I also believe that there were a lot of free tickets, and even more tickets that were sold for less than $3.00 so that his countrymen would have the opportunity to watch Chavez fight live. I have never seen a fighter who truly seemed to fight for his country more than Chavez. He gave the Mexican people something to be proud of on the international stage. He carried the weight of that pressure with every fight, and, seemed to relish it. That is why more than 30 years later, most Mexicans still choose Chavez as the greatest Mexican fighter over men like Canelo, Marquez, Barrera, etc.
It was great for the fans at the sametime felt bad to see some of those great fighters in front of half empty arenas.
Part of it is that there is no free boxing ever on tv anymore unless its rookies. And that boxing never wanted to advertise itself like the wwe or ufc did. If I want to see two toys boxing I need to get wwe figures! And forget about t shirts and hats and posters! Also, and this is not to be racist but to us, names like Garbachivok or Thasanakoof are hard to remember. Even the names of Payao Poontarat and Sot Chitilada back in the day were super easy to remember back in the day! As far as Chavez-Haugen, even I got pissed off at Haugen for treating my fellow Latino brothers and sisters like that and Im not even Mexican. When someone or some country goes against us, we stand united. (unless that person or country was our own, in which case then we obviously need to stand by our own, or, like if it was a Latino from another country insulting a Latino from the third country or two Latino countries that are not our own, in which case we go neutral) I wanted to see Chavez do something about it but I knew it was a foregone conclusion. Chavez looked invincible at that time. What I really wanted to see were the undercard fights! It helped that my grandfather also wanted to see the fights. he was 75 already but always looked older than his actual age and me being 20, I thought 75 was already near the next step. It turns out, he lived 20 more years! God bless all my grandparents, I love them very much still! Chavez still hates Haugen, which I really dont get. Its been enough time to get over it and forgive. Its not like Haugen did things that are really almost unforgivable , like murder and graping someone!
He still hates El Chapo Rosario too..lol He doesnt seem to have an easy time letting go of things. The one guy he loved was Macho Camacho, they were great friends.
When I went to Puerto Rico in 2008, I went to a restaurant that had photos of celebrities eating on it at their walls and one of them had Camacho and Chavez sitting on the same table eating!
Greg Haugen could get under anyone's skin. If he saw a scab on you he would pick at it until it bled. But that was part of his magic. Ali showed everyone the way. I remember at one part of the pre-promotion where Haugen was on about the Tijuana cab drivers and that he spotted on Chavez' record the name Jerry Lewis. Well, with that Haugen went off laughing, "Hey look, he fought the Nutty Professor." They said Chavez was seething. But to @Smokin Bert 's point they were charging about $1.65 for tickets, which is why the attendance was so high.
