Yep faded Whitaker was also tagging Trinidad with good shots and causing him issues with his defense. Lara has the style that has always given Tito problems. If Tito doesn't stop him, I can see Lara winning on points given fair judging.
Whitaker, even in faded form, is Whitaker. One of the greatest fighters of all time. Lara had none of Whitaker's IQ, chin and mental toughness. The last part is especially important. Lara is a mental midget. He was very skilled and talented in his prime, but there was a lot missing in terms of intangibles. If he had intangibles, he would have shut out Canelo. I still think he won the Canelo fight, but really its his own fault for the loss. He coasted too much in that, whereas a great -- like Crawford or Floyd -- showed you how limited Canelo could look when you can consistently outclass him for all 12 rounds. Lara lacked that in his game, and youre not winning against Trinidad like that. Lara has never exhibited the type of chin and stamina to pick him over Trinidad. And for some odd reason, this form criminally underrates Trinidad's skill level. You would think Trinidad was David Tua the way some guys on here talk about him. From an attention seeker with no boxing knowledge like No Neck, I expect it. But most guys should be remembering here that Tito was once considered P4P #1 in an era with Jones, Oscar, Mosley, Floyd, and Hopkins. Even in a WEAK era, Lara never cracked the top 10 P4P.
Trinidad either runs Lara out of the ring or knocks him out brutally. People bring up the Angulo fight but don’t forget caveman Hurd walking down Master Lara and smacking him around. In boxing there’s 3 main ranges: inside, midrange and outside and there’s 3 main types of fighters: Guys that move and stay outside, guys that stand and fight and guys that come and get you. It’s not that Lara lacks intangibles or focus or determination. It actually takes a lot of nerve and concentration to fight the way he does. What Lara is is a very specialized amateur style outside fighter/pot shotter with no midrange or inside skills at all. He can’t really stand and fight. Guys like Lara do best against “stand and fight” guys that will just kind of watch him move around but against a high level “come and get you” fighter, especially an explosive midrange puncher like Trinidad, he’s just a runner thats extremely vulnerable whenever he gets caught in front of his opponent. Prime Trinidad was quick and focused and while he had trouble with movement he wasn’t really that vulnerable to potshots and outside fighters. DLH was a great mid range puncher himself and he was able to use his footwork to pick spots and create angles where Trinidad had to react to his punches. Hopkins was a great inside fighter and the bigger man and when Trinidad set up in front of him he could smother him and push him around. Lara has no way to stop Trinidad’s forward march and no way to nullify Trinidad when he gets close. All he can do is run and fling good luck left hands.
Tito hit way harder than Canelo and Lara was also KD by Hurd who also doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Trinidad. Tito TKO 7-9 while maybe behind on PTS
Hurd was way bigger than Tito and had thrown hundreds of punches before dropping Lara a single time. Tito's power at 154 and above wasn't better than Canelo's. Maybe a better left hook and worse everything else. Lara has put guys away with one shot. Maybe you should be asking yourself if a guy who got dropped a bunch of times at 147 would like getting hit by him.
Trinidad was clearly a bigger puncher than Canelo at 154. Who did Canelo beat at 154 that Trinidad doesn’t smash? Canelo was a midget with t-rex arms that edges and tiptoes up to his opponents. Trinidad was a snow crab that comes forward like you just called his mom a *****. After making Lara run laps for 7 or 8 rounds Tito’s long lead straight right would start busting Lara’s chops.
Tito was the first fighter to stop Vargas at 154 and almost ended him in the first 60 seconds of the fight. Tito was the first fighter to stop Mayorga who at that time was known to be very durable. Tito was the first fighter to stop Joppy at 160 and he utterly destroyed him. The only fighters Tito didn't stop at those weights were... David Reid who was floored about 3 or 4 times and barely survived. Bernard Hopkins who has an ATG chin and is considerably bigger. Winky Wright who also has a very good chin and is defensive master who has never been stopped. Canelo went the distance with Cotto at 160 who would've been stopped by Tito for sure. Let's looks at some of Canelo's stoppages at 154 and 160. Amir Khan a glass chinned former Lightweight moving up 2 weighclasses. James Kirkland who had already been stopped in 1 round by the feather fisted Ishida. Kirkland was also inactive and was basically semi retired at that point. Kermit Cintron a glass cannon. Alfredo Angulo a B class fighter who already got stopped quicker by Kirkland. Carlos Baldomir 39 years old way past his prime. Ryan Rhodes a solid european/british level fighter nothing more still went 12 rounds. Josesito Lopez spent a majority of his career at Jr Welterweight/Welterweight. There's not a single opponent that Canelo stopped at 154 or 160 that Tito wouldn't pulverize.
You needed to proof read this. 1. If you were around back then and fully potty trained, you’d know that Vargas had a habit of waving his chin out and getting hurt, even he remained undefeated. Ditto David Reid. 2. You compared Ricardo Mayorga to Erislandy Lara. You also decided to not compare Winky Wright to Erislandy Lara. 3. Joppy was competitive and throwing like a hundred punches per round until eventually folding. Doesn’t compare to Lara. 4. Canelo’s resume speaks for itself. I don’t need to explain why the vast majority of fighters at 154 and higher would be more likely to get stopped by him than Tito.
How many times are you going to be sarcastic about my age ? it's actually pretty boring now get new material. I suppose you having all these opinions on Foreman in the 70s must be irrelevant then going by your logic ? since you wasn't around in that era ? That's the beauty of modern technology and the internet with information being very easily accessible aswell as old footage. How many times had Vargas been floored prior to the Tito fight ? Who compared Mayorga to Lara ? I'm debating your argument that Tito isn't a bigger puncher than Canelo at the weights you listed. And Wright isn't nothing like Lara ? Wright has a high guard defence and stays infront of his opponent. Again i'm not comparing Joppy to Lara i'm giving examples of Tito's punching power. So basically your reply is a cop out answer with no context about the opponents when i actually gave context of all the opponents good to know.
Debating who hit harder is irrelevant because they can obviously hurt Lara. Trinidad is clearly the better offensive fighter and his range makes a big difference against a guy that has to stay on the outside at all times. A counter punching midget was the perfect opportunity for Lara to shine but Lara just didn’t have the tools but at least he could relax and coast on the outside. Against Trinidad the danger and pressure is constant.
Canelo broke BJS’ orbital and knocked Sergei Kovalev unconscious. He is a great two handed puncher. He turned Kirkland into a video game character. Watch what he did to Baldomir and his supposed iron chin. Vargas got rocked by Wilfredo Rivera and Quartey. Winky was also tagging him, but Winky had limited power. If Tito had Canelo level power above 147, Hopkins would’ve had to play it safe because Tito did land shots on him.
Lara has 3 inches of reach on Tito and schooled Paul Williams, not Canelo. You’re all mixed up, my friend.
And Tito had 4 inch height advantage and 2 inch reach advantage over Canelo making him a more dangerous opponent for Lara.
