I was thinking about which fights had crazy endings while making my 15 fights for @Saintpat's thread, and I'd been thinking about this for the last few weeks now. Which fights had an insane ending, but not in a disappointing or weird sense, but in an exciting and fantastic sense? My two quick examples until I get my dinner break are Sosa vs Williams 1, which ended when both men pulled their guy out of the fight in the same round to save them from too much punishment; and Murphy vs Mutti, which is basically a real life Rocky where both guys go down and the one who got up won. Are there any other examples as crazy as these? PS: On Film please, I wanna see them.
There has been one I have been looking for years after watching on YouTube, I believe the fighter slips over dramatically on their back before then getting knocked out later in the fight. To my recollection it would have been 80’s or early 90’s, but unable to access it again. Perhaps not insane, but very amusing. Immediately the Tszyu vs Judah finish comes to mind but I look forward to following this thread for more.
I’ll throw Micky Ward vs Alfonso Sanchez into the discussion. Unbelievable because Ward had been schooled for six rounds with little to offer and even knocked down the round before, and it was uncompetitive enough to merit stopping him. Unique because you don’t often get one-punch KOs from body shots (especially with doing nothing to wear the opponent down or soften him up first). And an absolutely dreadful bout to watch up to the point of the stoppage, haha.
Ben Tackie vs Roberto Garcia Tackie was being hopelessly outboxed w/Garcia putting on a clinic but somehow rallies late to stop Garcia in the 10th and final round while trailing by about 4 points on each of the judges scorecards.
1ST One to pop in my head was Mike Weaver vs John Tate. After following Tate around docilly almost the entirety of that15 rd ffight and being well behind on the score cards, Weaver lands a left hook from out of the blue and Good night Mr. Tate. One of the more shocking finishes to a heavyweight championship fight. 2nd one Bobby Chacon winning in the last possible moments against "Bazooka" Limon with knock downs in the 15 rd to take the championship from him. # 3 Diego Corrales being battered from one corner to the next against Juan Castillo only to win by ko the very next rd.
Ad Wolgast- Joe Rivers double knockdown when the referee moves in to untangle Wolgast from Rivers as he counts Joe out.
John Meekins fighting Mohamad Kawayo (spelling?). The ref jumps in to protect Kawayo who was getting battered along the ropes. And just as the ref jumps in (facing Kawayo) Kawayo lands a right that spills Meekins badly. The ref doesn't even know about it and had to be pointed to the stricken fighter. His stoppage stood. Also Virgil Hill defended his title against Adolpho Washington. Hill was ahead and Washinton was cut. But an over-zealous cameraman, wanting to get a closer look at the cut, rams his lens right into the eye causing an immediate stoppage.
Shannon Briggs knocking Siarhei Liakhovich out of the ring at 2:59 or round 12 in a championship fight while trailing on cards.
