Jack Johnson is remembered for Burns, Ketchel, Jeffries and Willard but his pre-title resume is far superior and filled with tough guys ... McVea, Jeannette, Ed Martin, Hank Griffin, Ji, Flynn. Sam, Langford, Marvin Hart, Ferguson, Gardner ...

    Greb & Charles

Greb for me though.. before he beat Walker & Tunney he has MULTIPLE wins over men like the Gibbons brothers, Jeff Smith, Battling Levinsky, Leo Houck, Jack Dillon, Bill Brennan, Billy Miske, Mike McTigue, Al McCoy, George Chip etc...

Gene Tunney deserves a mention as well, as he became world champion towards the very end of his great career.

I was always impressed with Marvin Hagler's resume before he attained the throne. Beating Bennie Briscoe, Willie Monroe, Bobby Watts, Cyclone Hart, Mike Colbert, Sugar Ray Seales (twice), Kevin Finnegan (twice), Johnny Baldwin and drawing with Vito Antuofermo over 15 rounds is far more impressive than many championship records.

At HW, Frazier had a hell of a resume before unifying with Ali for the lineal title.

Hagler also has a very good resume before becoming champ.
