I don’t like how most filmmakers like the imagination to present a boxing promoter as anything but a caricature of Don King.

Like he’s the only promoter ever, lol.

The promoter in the original Rocky movie had a bit of a slimy feel to him but didn’t actually do anything shady, and I liked his portrayal.

And I absolutely adored Samuel L Jackson as The Rev. Fred Sultan in The Great Whyte Hype. I think they clearly took some inspiration from King as far as ‘crooked promoter’ but created a unique and different character with his own charisma and style so it wasn’t an imitation or a stereotype.

    Hi Buddy.
Annoying it truly was, also Rocky's incessant shoulder rolls, and body punches that lift you off the floor, the ring looking 100ft by 100ft.
    stay safe Barrf, chat soon.

It always makes noise when you hit someone.

A manager is the same thing as a trainer.

    There is one heavyweight champion.

I generally give Boxing films a bit of artistic license. The fights are there to further the story, which can be at the expense of realism.

The part I struggle with most though is fighters taking it in turns to punch each other. Rocky III is probably the worst/best example of this, where it doesn't occur to Clubber to throw hands until his trainer tells him to. It seems to creep into nearly all cinematic fights though.

Something I never liked about the Rocky franchise, is the result of Rocky - Apollo 2.
Apollo takes the first fight lightly and still wins a split decision, he trains like a madman and is highly motivated for the rematch, but Rocky starts training late and is unmotivated until the last minute re Adrian.
Rocky is more likely to say no mas than get the win.

A version of "Angel: Every Boxer's Girlfriend" seems to be in every boxing film (from Cinderella Man to Rocky 4 to even "The Wrestler" with Mickey Rourke)

They may not all have the same accent, but the tortured wife or girlfriend begging them to quit is always there.

When, in reality, it's rarely like that. The women are usually as hard as the men. Guys like Ali had many wives, he dumped his first because she wouldn't dress like a Muslim. His second wife wore a George Foreman shirt to the Foreman fight after Ali punched her in the mouth and she threatened to break Veronica Porshe's back when she learned of their affair. And after Ali married Veronica, at the Berbick fight where Ali looked like a corpse, Veronica was partying with John Travolta in the dressing room and they both told reporters they thought Ali beat Berbick and he should keep fighting. There were no women begging Ali to call it quits.

Only a matter of time before the heartless promoter in films is the oil man in a turban and sunglasses. ;)

Best boxing spouse = Chuck Wepner's wife. Before his fight with Ali, he told her she was going to be sleeping with the HW champion that night. After the fight, she asked him whether Ali was going to come to her room or whether she should go to Ali's room. Legend.

I feel Rocky deserving to win fight 1 on the merits but losing and Apollo deserving to win fight 2 on the merits but losing makes things seem less predictable. I liked that decision.

That you can get hit that much and not get killed.
Seriously , Rocky vs Apollo or whatever was 15 rounds of no defense where they just hit eachother in the face. Foreman vs Lyle Lasted 5 ronuds, Hagler vs Hearns lasted 3. Yes you had fights like FoTC and Manilla but even those, Ali did not stand in the middle of hte ring to trade.

As boxing fans when you see two guys going for it, you know it isnt going the full 12.
