Do you think Wilder’s team maximized his earning potential to the best of their abilities?

Do you think Wilder’s team did a great job monetizing him as a boxer during his career based on his boxing talent (or lack of)?

He seemed to have made good earnings from fighting Fury 3x and now he’s fighting Usyk for perhaps another money fight even though he’s on a decline. Would he have made even more if he fought AJ instead when they both had all the belts?

Overall they did a good job. I'm not in the camp that thinks that Wilder was always a fraud, he did have glaring weaknesses but had power, speed, and heart so getting a world title (in a fairly weak era) matched, so to speak, his overall ability.

He should have taken the Joshua fight though. There was huge money in that, but also a big risk of losing. Instead they waited and took Fury instead (see below) and Joshua meanwhile lost his aura against Ruiz and then was comprehensively beaten by Usyk. There's still some money in the Joshua fight actually, but only a fraction of what was on offer before.

His team thought a returning Fury was going to be easy to beat and that they could always fight Joshua later; it's a case of marinating the fight gone wrong. From a fan viewpoint this is not what should happen, but from a purely $$ perspective it was an understandable mistake. Many of us (including myself) thought he would spark Fury.

They maximized the number of title fights he had for sure. How much is the premium for a single AJ fight opposed to fighting John Doe? I dunno but its not that much. Either way they snuck him into a club with Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Wladimir Klitschko.

Managers job is to get the fighter the belt then to keep it on him after as many encounters with opponents as possible. Not only did Wilders team succeed they should be teaching courses at university on this.

Something about Wilder v AJ is most of the time that fight could have happened they were waiting for the Fury situation to be cleared up. Before it did them fighting didn't really make sense.

Of course. The job they did with Wilder is actually phenomenal.

If you dont care too much about legacy and being great, but approach the sport a bit more pragmatic, with getting the most money for the least damage, they almost guided him perfectly up until the cash outs against fury.
They really couldnt have done any better, imo.
    Tier 1 classic boxing manufacturing.

They did an almost-perfect job from a promotional, match-making perspective.

    - Matched him up against beatable opponents for a few years to build his highlight reel
    - Correctly (from their point of view) took the opportunity to get out of remaking the Povetkin fight when it fell apart
    - Picked the right time to step him up against Luis Ortiz
    - Picked Tyson Fury at the right time in 2018 (and very nearly KO'd him in the 12th)

Where they could have done better was right after the first Fury fight in 2018. When Fury went to ESPN, they should've instead tried harder to make the Joshua fight, still the biggest fight in boxing at the time, instead of bothering with Breazeale and the Ortiz rematch while waiting for the Fury rematch. But then AJ got himself KO'd by Ruiz, Wilder got himself KO'd by Fury and AJ-Wilder was never again worth as much as it could've been.

taking a guy with a good right hand and and making him an amount of money that should last a life time. Yeah.
especially considering that he knew nothing else about boxing....had no other boxing skills worth mentioning. Yeah. now he needs to retire.

Did they maximise his image? Absolutely. They created an illusion. A carefully created fraud whose power was magnified by his oppositions inability to take a punch.

Did they maximise his revenue - no, they would have made more money fighting AJ.

But thats 1 fight? If he loses hes out of the picture sooner.

Now if a promoter or the Saudis write a check thats one thing but the PPVs for a fight like Wilder v AJ aren't going to be that much more then Wilder v a generic opponent to the extent it'd justify chopping off 3-4 fights.

A fight between a prime Wilder and a prime AJ would have been epic. But, instead of getting fights like that, we get garbage fights, like AJ vs. Robert Helenius, vs. Jermaine Franklin, vs. a UFC guy. . .and Wilder also against Helenius, and Tyson Fury against guys so obscure I can't even remember. . . the sport of professional boxing always lets the fans down. Top HW's promise us exciting matches, and deliver garbage fights instead. SMH. . ..

I'm not going to claim to have paid a special attention to it, but I've watched a lot of Wilder fights and what I think is he had talent and worked really hard, but he's one of those guys who always reverts to form when things go off at all, and he was never going to be able to bring things he worked on into a regular game plan. He fights with his nature, not with his brain. It's who he is. Considering that, the fact that he was going to get punished by guys who can box and have decent power, he went a pretty damn incredible way in the matter of building a record that generates a profit. I don't like what they did for the sport but they had an early Wlad fight when he got that title and if they'd guided him into that fight (the right one, for integrity) as I believe Wilder was always game for, it would've likely destroyed all of his real earning potential. He may never have had anything after that. I don't see how they could've gotten him much more. He will see the HOF, as crazy as that really is, because what happened, happened with a title that he had because of a cautious team who knew he didn't even really deserve to be the champion at any time.

This. Right after Fury 1 they should have cashed out against AJ, the hype would have been huge. I say cashed out because AJ is just a simply better boxer than Wilder with more than enough power to switch him off. However, AJ seems to have an iffy chin on occasion, and if Dubois could hurt him then for sure so could Wilder. If Wilder flattened AJ he could have basically written his own cheques thereafter.

In fairness, that AJ fight was only ever available at all because of the image they manufactured for him.

And, if we're being charitable, fighting a washed up Fury should've been a good way to boost his profile and earning power - it's just that even in terrible condition Fury was better than Wilder (which says plenty about how good Wilder wasn't).

The AJ fight was always the end of the gravytrain - milking the pretense that it could ever happen made sense to leech attention, but it was always a guaranteed loss... I guess they figured they could make plenty by continuing to fight bums after shot Fury, and they were wrong.

Overall, you have to say, they did amazing for him.
