We can say the exact same about Rocky.

Put him with the best guys of the 80’s-90’s, and his 49-0 wouldn’t have existed.

An ancient Moore and Charles caused him issues, as did Roland. And he was only 5’10, with a tiny reach, weighing below 200 pounds.

He was also a brawler who cut.

    He was a legend.

And I know that there’s many, many guys of the past who could have beaten today’s guys. I know that there’s been many fighters in history, who were just flat out better than many of the guys today.

I even get accused of being nostalgic at times.

But from everything we know about Rocky, we know that he’d have struggled in a stronger era, and especially against the bigger guys.

What do you mean, show you data?

If we brought back same day weigh-ins, the majority of today’s guys would have to move up a division.

I’m sure that you know this.

Today, we have WW’s who rehydrate to the same weights as JMW’s-MW’s on fight night.

We know what they rehydrate to.

We know what Spence and Brook used to weigh.

What Canelo rehydrated to. You’ve told me often enough about when he fought Floyd.

    What did he weigh?

Over 170 pounds on fight night?

    That’s LHW.

Canelo couldn’t have weighed in at 152 against Floyd, then fought the same day.

This is about Floyd. He was fine weighing in and not putting on a ton of weight. He was that special.

    We know this.

But if you’re looking at where he’d hypothetically have fought at 126 pounds back in the 60’s, then that would have been with a same day weigh-in, which would have been like a modern day FW.

    Floyd wouldn’t have done that.

He wouldn’t have weighed in at 126 pounds the day of the fight, and fought there for a prolonged period.

His prime weights during his actual career, were between LW-WW.

That was weighing in at 135-147 pounds, with a day before weigh-in.

So if he’d have fought in the 60’s and 70’s, he’d more than likely have fought as a WW.

Moore was old, but he wasn’t that far past it, like for example Mosley was. He was still elite.

Charles was past it , though still decent. But Charles is an all time great almost a lock for top ten.

My main argument why Rocky is as good as or better than Floyd is there aren’t many guys his size we would favour over him, some of the bigger heavies sure, an few elite 190- 200 pounders maybe.

Floyd is not favourite to beat most of the historically great guys that are around his weight. Even with those divisions being stacked how does that mean Floyd’s better than Rocky?

How does that make Floyd one of the most skilled fighters ever? It doesn’t it means he was in a weak era like Rocky was, so Resume is even less of a factor in rating these two, you have to look st the head to head credentials, Rocky’s are better

    I despair.

Have we not already done this?

Have we not been through all of this already?

Yet bizarrely you still can’t see why it’s not a fair comparison.

Floyd wouldn’t have been favoured against all of the best WW’s in history, no.

    1. It wasn’t his prime weight.

    2. There’s a huge list of great WW’s.

The reason you wouldn’t have favoured many CW’s over Rocky, is because you could only give me just TWO great CW’s from history.

Now just for the sake of the debate, let us pretend that the CW division was stacked, where there were 10-15 guys, absolutely comparable to Usyk and Evander.

    Then what??

    That would obviously change everything.

It’s not that Rocky was so much better than Floyd.

It’s that there are more great WW’s throughout history, than what there are CW’s.

    It’s pretty simple to grasp.

Yes, Floyd didn’t fight in the best WW era ever. But it was still strong. Stronger than Rocky’s era, where there was a 40 odd year old guy, who’d fought in his prime at LHW, where he’d fought almost 200 fights.

Floyd potentially losing to some historically great WW’s, doesn’t mean that he wasn’t one of the greatest skilled fighters of all time.

I’m talking about his technical skills. His offence and defence. His technique. His timing. His accuracy. His footwork etc.

Floyd was a technician. He had tremendous technical boxing skills.

He could use his craft to out box guys.

Rocky never outboxed great fighters. He was a brawler.

He had some more apparent technical skills but that alone doesn’t make him the better fighter.

I’d pick several lesser heavyweights that I’d say were more skilled than Frazier, but they’re not as great as him.

Rocky would be excellent under 200lbs in any era and competitive at heavyweight in most era, despite being small with short arms.

Floyd despite his skills wouldn’t be favoured over any of the very best at any weight. There were many more great smaller men than cruisers or even heavies though.

Resume is one thing, in reality they’re a lot closer than you think.

I don’t know how anyone could have Floyd or Rocky all that far above the other, all the evidence is that they are close.

    Yorbals,

No, that alone doesn’t put him ahead. What puts him ahead, is that with the criteria that I use, he comes out on top of every major factor that’s considered.

I get that. But again, I’m looking at all relevant factors, not just the one.

    I agree.

Floyd would have been favoured over some of the greats from the past.

Also, I’m ranking based on what they actually did, not what they may or may not have done.

They’re not close to me, simply because Floyd tops every factor that I look at.

Again, if you don’t agree with the criteria used, we can use yours.

My evidence is that they were both great, but that Floyd trumps him in every relevant factor, based upon traditional ranking criteria.

Well, just put your list with Mayweather on top, then all is right isn’t it, you’ve used your traditional criteria, I think Rocky is greater because I don’t put as much emphasis on resume as you.

P4P, Marciano does better despite being a heavyweight in his time, i’d only pick someone like Usyk or Holyfield to beat him or give him trouble at cruiser, and he could be a champ at heavy in other eras.

I see Floyd being less likely to be a champion or dominant champ at welter or lightweight in most decades than Marciano being one at cruiser or heavy. Again, LW and WW are stacked, so there fair enough.
I just don’t think Floyd was as great as many do, very skilled yes.

I don’t like how Floyd is labelled as being the GOAT by many, based off of his stats.

So I think he’s overrated by many.

However, he was still one of the greatest fighters in history.

Do you know anything about Ricardo Lopez?

I’’m sad to say that I have no knowledge of his career. I only know of his record.

    @JohnThomas1

Hi mate, I hope all is good.

I just wondered if you could give us some insight into the career of Ricardo Lopez.

I’d rather read from a knowledgable fan, rather than from online.

    Many thanks.
