why couldnt Canelo reach fistic supremacy?

He was green when he fought Mayweather. He just did have the right style to beat him. He addef some things after but, If he had won, he would have employees the same style. IMO.

being undisputed is supremacy. being the first man to do it at 168 is as well.
if you are asking why he wasn't supreme in everything he tried, who has?

 

The undisputed and multiple weight champion did pretty well.

 

GGG was prime or very slightly past it for their first fight. GGG DID win the first fight, but it wasnt remotely dominant as many expected. To be fair, Canelo had campaigned at 155 for years and offered a CW of 157 which GGG shot down. Had GGG agreed, and assuming team Canelo didnt move the goalposts, the fight wouldve happened sooner.

Its clear though the style that troubles Canelo is the boxer/mover/thinkers, not the power punchers. Floyd, Bud, and Bivol all decisively beat Canelo. GGG did win the first fight but it wasnt as dominant as those wins. Even fight two, I felt that was a draw.

GGG still live versus ANY MW in history of the sport. ANY.

 

He lost the first Golovkin fight clearly but the second I think could go either way so he definitely has a case for winning against a fellow ATG still close to prime and moved up to his division. Good efforts against Crawford and Bivol, embarrassed by Mayweather. Amazing resume with a lot of very good wins. A few questionable but that’s nothing new in the sport. Incredibly entertaining fighter although he regressed to a more plodding methodical style in recent years, I think his knees are screwed so he’s adjusted.

 

Canelo was a great fighter who had a great career but he wasn't like the elite elite of fighters.

Some fans overrated him a fair bit.

 

Canelo just never addressed shortcomings, boxing while moving, major stamina issues, and his power come forward approach completely eliminated the combination punching that made him famous in the first place.

 

GGG was 35 in the first fight, he was past his best put it that way. Jacobs fight would have been Comfortable for Golovkin 3 or 4 years earlier.
Look at Canelo at 35, stuck in the mud with his feet. They still had to rob Golovkin like you said.
A 30 yr old Golovkin v 30 yr old Canelo, Canelo would never win.

 

Those arent comparable. 30 y/o Canelo had almost 60 fights most against top guys while 30 y/o GGG had about 25 fights none of which versus top guys. That wouldve been the Proska/Rosado GGG versus the Kovalev/Callum Smith versions of Canelo.

I would NOT favor GGG in those circumstances to beat Canelo. GGG wouldve been out of his element, thrusted into the spotlight in ways that make people uncomfortable, and those small things disrupt camp and detract focus. GGG needed to come to US sooner, his handlers greatly underestimated what they had in him.

GGG is live versus any MW EVER. Not saying he beats them all but hes no walk in the park for ANYONE. Canelo does not have the PEAK that GGG has, but he has a bit more range...he couldve competed with any 154lb in history, though he wouldve lost quite a few (decisions only). Canelo also wouldve been in every fight at 168 but also wouldve lost quite a bit.

 

In a different era and with proper judges Clenelo would have been the boxing equivalent of Gilbert Burns

 

Why would you not favour him? Canelo was gifted a draw while bang in prime against an old GGG, if they’re both the same age I can’t see anything other than a Golovkin win, and Golovkin had way more amateur fights which aren’t the same but he was obviously slipping while Canelo was still prime when they did fight

 

The best ever version of Canelo was against Chavez Jr. He looked utterly supreme that night and passed every eye test there is.

 

Canelo is as good as you can be without making it into atg status. His foot work was too bad and he climbed up in weight too much. Floyd was too experienced and Crawford was just too skilled, while not being as small as advertised. I think his loss against Crawford was actually close but he was expected to win by KO. The other loss is Bivol who skill wise is probably an atg and is bigger. If Canelo had stayed at middleweight he could have retired without losing again, he would still not have good footwork but could win by landing a big shot here or there.

 

Canelo was in his prime when he fought Floyd. Floyds style was all wrong for Canelo. Before you scoff , ask yourself how old was prime Tyson.

In reality he was a pretty good fighter but not great. He had no gears, fought the same pace all the time, and became more one dimensional as he got older. Never blew past any top fighter, he either struggled or lost. Who was the best fighter he blew out again?

If Canelo was so great he would have beat GGG in their first bout but he didn't....
