Wardley beating Usyk is a bigger upset than Tyson Douglas

It won't. With hindsight, considering where Tysons career went, sure. But he was considered to be unbeatable by many, and in terms of age, not even in his prime years yet.

People put their houses up on Tyson, almost no one gave Douglas a prayer. Even up until the 9th round, when Douglas really rocked Tyson, people were just waiting for Tyson to win in spite of Douglas whooping him for most the previous 8.

Usyk is closing in on 40, and although could be considered greater than Tyson at Heavyweight, hasn't looked unbeatable. Wardley has youth, he's unbeaten and has dynamite in both hands.

Douglas beating Tyson was the biggest upset in sports history. Wardley winning would be an upset sure, but closer to Ruiz vs Joshua (and still not even as big).

 

Usyk has only fought 5 HW’s and was in his prime at CW.

No, it wouldn't, and I am one of Usyk's biggest fan boys.

Even some of Usyk's biggest boosters on here are worried that he is a bit long in the tooth. This is exactly the phase where and upset is no surprise, though I have not yet seen the man I think beats him.

The public perception of Tyson at the time was not only that he was unbeatable but also the baddest man alive

People would be surprised if Wardley beat Uysk sure, but it wouldn't even come close to the genuine shock around the world when Tyson was beat by Douglas

 

No....Tyson was a 48/1 favorite ! Wardley will be about 6/1 imo

Wardley has as much a punchers chance as Dubious and AJ, so none...on that note yes beating Usyk would be a big upset for him.

 

Usyk is coming towards the end of his career and most of his Heavyweight fights outside of Dubois were competitive.

So whilst Wardley beating Usyk would be very surprising it wouldn't have anywhere the near the same impact as Douglas upsetting Tyson.

Tyson in 37 fights prior to the Douglas fight had stopped 33 of his opponents and was barely ever in a competitive fight.

I think If you added up the total rounds Tyson lost in his career up until the Douglas fight. It would've been no more than like 14 rounds in total and we're talking about across 37 professional fights destroying top 10 ranked Heavyweights like they were nothing.

Tyson at that time was seen as an unbeatable monster and was way more famous than Usyk.

So to answer the thread absolutely not.

The difference is that unlike Tyson, Usyk wouldn't let the upset happen.

 

Usyk is old enough where a loss at his age could be blamed on Father time. Also Wardley is an undefeated top contender right now people are high on.

I'm trying to think of an apt example to get somewhere close to Tyson and Douglas so I'll have to use my imagination a little given the circumstances.

A comparison would be if Usyk was only 24 years old with his accomplishments and he had KOd Tyson Fury in 1 round. Then Tony Yoka of all people boxes beautifully, dominates Usyk, and KOs him. That would be closer to Tyson-Douglas than present day Usyk vs Wardley in terms of upsets

 

Usyk is old.
Losing to a good contender really wouldn't be a huge upset.
