How does Roy Jones do vs the Larry Holmes that Michael Spinks fought Does Roy Jones win the heavyweight title?
Jones gets knocked out. Spinks is a better HW than him. Roy Jones vs Trevor Berbick is a much better fight
Jones might have been a bit faster at heavyweight than Michael Spinks was. Skill level is pretty close. But the gap in size between Holmes and Jones would be greater than it was between himself and Spinks. I also think Michael might have had a bit more sting to his punches at heavyweight than Jones did. And he was a proven 15 round fighter. Even then they were two close fights with one of them even being controversial. With all that said I won’t declare a definite loss for Jones. Larry had shown down significantly and was struggling seemingly in most of his more recent fights. And jones was great. But if leaning towards someone to favor ( slightly ) I’ll go with 1985 Holmes.
Spinks was incredibly slick and cautious in the first fight with Holmes yet still got caught a few times. Holmes had him going multiple times across the two fights and he actually gave up the early rounds in the rematch to slow a dangerous (to him) Holmes up. Spinks also had a fantastic underrated jab, was 3 1/2" taller and had an extra couple of inches of reach. Roy can't pull it off. He can't fight the fight Spinks did.
Holmes by knockout, and I'm sure Jones knows that too, being the smart fighter he is, and wouldn't step into the ring against Larry.
