Why is Ray Robinson NOT the number 1 p4p fighter?

Being the bigger man, Maxim did not have to move as much as SRR, so the heat did not affect him as much.
SRR did not rematch him cause he retired and Maxim lost the title.

That's debatable, but for me he does, since Langford had quite a few losses in his prime while SRR only had 1 which he avenged 5 times.

 

Excellent resume no doubt.. i still prefer Greb overall.. 5 MW champs beaten. 4 MW title claimants beaten. 7 LHW champions beaten. 1 Future HW champ beaten.

According to many professional eyewitness reports his true record against Tunney should be 3-2 too.. Numerous accounts also hold that his record against Flowers should be 3-0, and that he should have retired as MW Champion.

Wheras Robinson is quoted as saying "I'm too pretty to fight Charley Burley".. For many years, LaMotta was the only significant heavier contender of consequence he'd test himself against. Maxim was a great LHW and competent HW, but he wasn't the lethal hitter Charles and Moore could be. Nor did it end well for him..

Ray laughed it off when Curt Gowdy asked him if he'd challenge for the HW Title had he succeeded at dethroning Maxim. Bob Satterfield was one of the hitters he specifically mentioned he'd want nothing to do with.

I think its a given Harry might have gone right after Satterfield & he'd never dismiss Burley like that either...

Robby came in at 157.5 for Maxim, and exited that stifling outdoor 103 Fahrenheit ring weighing 141.5! (Former HW Maxim came in at 173 and exited the ring weighing 163.) If SSR entered his LHW Title challenge very comfortably below the MW limit, and would have been crowned the 175 LB Championship at what could easily have been the LWW 140 pound limit (imagine that) after successfully completing the Championship Distance, then in what early 1950's pre steroid world could Ray have possibly have gone up in weight 60 pounds from 157.5? (Mackie Shilstone and Michael Spinks challenging Larry Holmes was still nearly three and a half decades in the future, but the Jinx was also three inches taller than Robby.)

As with Duran leading after 13 against a peak MMH, much of Robby's all time P4P GOAT cachet comes from dropping only three of 13 completed rounds against an ATG LHW Champion (officially winning ten rounds on one card). Joey was so career drained after defending against Robinson that he was dethroned by Archie Moore in his next defense. (Even then, veteran Maxim went on to hand Olympic hero upstart Floyd Patterson his only defeat until Ingo I.)

 

Starting back in April 2007 here, I've repeatedly brought up that exchange between Gowdy and Robby about Satterfield on Curt's 1970's sports reminisence series, "The Way It Was," when they reviewed the Valentine Day's Massacre with Jake LaMotta. Of course the Raging Bull knocked out Satterfield in September 1946, and he stated on camera that although Robby was probably the hardest hitting lower weight fighter he ever fought, Bombardier Bob was his very hardest hitting opponent ovverall. (Robby mentioned Satterfield after turning to close buddy Jake as they laughed about it.)

That was a good series for reviewing boxing events. Louis with Galento, Pep with Saddler, Patterson with Ingo, Zale with Graziano (Tony letting television entertainment veteran Rocky do most of the talking, most of which was spent in praise of a cheerfully smiling Man of Steel, always in great shape), and Louis with JJW (a couple years after Jersey Joe declared Ali to be the GOAT following Manila).

 

Cause SRR was smaller.

 

They don't exist, he's nuts. At best, you could make a case for 2-3 boxers.

 

Sure. I think boxers in lower weight classes are more skilled, so no HW can ever enter my top 5 p4p.
Plus, I feel that Ali's greatness is due more to his exploits outside the ring than in the ring.
I also do not consider Ali a very skilled boxer, and IMO his success was mainly due to his incredible physical attributes (speed, reflexes, stamina, size advantage over 90% of his opponents).

 

Boxing 1940's style, and they done it monthly, or there about... just sayin'.
