Marvin Hagler vs Andre Ward

Size a little unfair

 

Ward could never make Hagler's weight class.

 

He was the first to clearly beat Hopkins since Roy Jones. I think that's pretty impressive.

 

I find these match-ups between fighters of different sizes a bit odd. Ward was a LHW as an amateur and would be so in Hagler's time as well. So what weight and what time of the weigh-in are two crucial questions here.

160 in the same day weigh-in era and it would be a success for Ward just to make it to the ring. And Hagler would be very undersized at 168 in Ward's time.

 

Do you still feel this way?

 

Regardless of the size advantage, Hagler beats Ward. The speed, skill, workrate, and even power all favor Marvin.

 

Yea it's unknown ground tbh, if Hagler had a 168 division he walked into or he tried his hand at LHW, we'd know more.

The other question is if Ward's tactics work even better against a smaller man?

 

Has anything changed which may convince me otherwise ?

 

Andre Ward was KO’D by a light weight in a fight where the light weight came in at 134 and Ward came in at 175. It was a 2nd round KO stoppage. It happened on a Tuesday. Remember?

Hagler would have a considerable reach advantage. As well as a speed advantage. I would have Marvin as a very live and slight underdog.

 

Ward and it wouldn’t be close

 

It was an underground boxing match that only me and Larry Merchant and Larry Holmes witnessed

 

This is a stay-in-your-lane fight.

Marvin’s lane was middleweight. He steps on the track against a true world-class SMW or LHW and he gets outclassed, pushed around and ragdolled. Ward and it’s fairly easy.
