Maybe it is. My point was teachers are teaching every child, every day for most the day until adulthood, for about 15 years they develop you and they dont get performance based pay.

Coaches are teaching you you for a couple hours after school, a few times a week, for a few years. They work less with a human than a school teacher

 

Honestly that still don't work

Boxing isn't part of a national curriculum which is required to keep society going
Boxing is a choice and one that is a specialist skill that in turn must be paid for

A kid at school is required to attend so a standard teacher will always have pupils and be paid the majority of the time by the country's government and that's because it's part of the cycle of society

There's an absolute huge difference in comparing a private sports coach to a school teacher

 

Ok. Well how about private schooling? Or private coaching with other things? Music lessons, other sports, acting lessons?

My point is, you pay the teacher/coach to teach you, not to invest in your future.
Other sports don’t do it like this. obviously the top coaches get paid more but they aren’t a shareholder in the business.

 

Oh they do in other professional fields mate, just in a different way.

When you’re training for accreditation, alongside all the exams and hours you’ve got to log, you’re basically tied to accredited firms aligned with the professional body. Those companies work you to death because they know you’ve got no choice but to stick it out, underpay you while maximising profit for themselves, and it’s all completely legal.

So yeah, everyone gets “paid back” off someone coming through, boxing just does it with percentages instead of wages.

Then the professional body does the same under the guise of subscriptions, licence fees and “continued professional development”, closer to being more corrupt than the WBC.

nobody is saying the coach should stay on the basic £3 a session wage from back in the day….but to have a large share in the business is unreasonable.

The rest of Boxing doesn’t work like that, look recently we had governing bodies give Crawford a lower fixed fee because 3% off his 50mill was too high.

 

Yeah agreed. If anything I think the old BBBofC standard contract set-up was even worse than what’s in place now. I’m sure it was Terry Marsh and Michael Watson who were calling it out as basically a slave contract in Boxing News back in the day.

And I’ve heard similar stories to what you’re saying about Magri and Duff, promoters/managers still taking a cut years after retirement because of what was originally signed and how it just rolled over automatically. That’s where it stops being “standard practice” and starts being properly grim.

Plus your promoter could be your manager back then, which is where it got even murkier.

 

One of the issues is mentality I think. Most fighters are kids/young men following a dream primarily, but everyone else are mature grown men and it’s their side is a business offering a service and most businesses want to make as much money as possible

I actually watched this a few days ago, it popped up in my feed after the weekend’s boxing. Brendan excelled at turning boys into men, building confidence and self-esteem along with discipline, a great teacher. Shame the backdrop was Nelson v De Leon, but then again you can see why Johnny and others hold Ingle in such high esteem, because after that he still never lost faith in him.

Still believe he had the beating on Carlos that night and just boxed scared, but he more than made up for it down the road. Just a shame we never got Nelson v Haye, or the Enzo fight, or even the Thompson rematch.
