Floyd Patterson Appreciation Thread

I love Patterson. Great boxer and a great person. Did some incredible things through his run and after his reign spread some fantastic wisdom. Easily one of my favorite champions.

 

Much love to Patterson, a true goat.

 

Floyd might be the greatest heavyweight gentleman champion ever.

 

If you count his entire career he might hit top 10 heavyweight OAT,but his championship career really spat on that potential,discounting that I think he fits.

 

He speaks to "elimination" and "elimination results".

What is he talking about?

Does he mean an eliminator or something?

 

He said Patterson chose to avoid fighting in one. Which one is he referring to? Don't remember there being one around that time?

 

Isn't this in 65 before Ali fought Patterson? If not nm.

 

Said it in this thread before, but I am a huge fan. I don’t really care how great a fighter is, if he has an interesting backstory and has character, I’m on board. Even if he just has character without the backstory, I’m in. Patterson was the poster boy for character.

 

If you figure he beat Ellis and Quarry as those were disputed loses and Johansen was a fluke that he reversed savagely twice then he only lost to Liston and Ali the 2 greatest heavyweights of all time up to then. That’s a pretty damn good record. He beat a lot of other good fighters Bonavena Machen Chuvalo Cooper London Archie Moore among others.

 

I heard Floyd offered to give up his spot to Liston, who I think was left out of the list of contenders; the guy who decimated him twice, yet willing to step aside because he thought Sonny deserved a chance. Was there ever a more decent man to wear the HW crown?
