Usyk in the paradoxical position that retiring would boost his legacy.

The main problem with Usyks career is his resume being too short and how he wasted the primes of dozens of talented HWs who already had to put up with 8 years of Tyson Furys nonsense.

Retiring doesn't help his legacy. What would help his legacy is actually being a champion and fighting new contenders. Not Andy Ruiz, not Deontay Wilder not Chisora Kabayel, Hrgovic, Frank Sanchez, Bakole, Okolie, Ajagba.

Dubois and Gassiev ok but Fury and Joshua aren't building anything for Usyk. Dubois is unlikely to ever be regarded higher then he was the day he beat Joshua. Dubois is a ticket that cashed for Usyk already.

I actually agree with Bubbles on Wardley as an individual. Theres a healthy chance Wardley never wins a big fight again. That fight would probably end up being a big waste of time in the long run. But theres dozens of others.

 

Usyk would be wise to retire before someone hands him an L and removes some of his mystique.

Numerous have retired with one loss. Not many have retired undefeated.

 

Fury and Joshua are complete write-offs now. They're not relevant in 2026. Just names to generate money, perhaps. They won't beat anyone relevant. Fighting each other does nothing for their rating against the field of actual contenders.

Gassiev isn't doing ****. This guy can't even beat Wallin. He's in a lower league. Not a real contender.

Dubois can win some, lose some.

 

Fighting the best available and deserving opponents will always add to a fighters legacy. Usyk can do this by fighting Kabayel or Wardley rather than a washed up Wilder or Ruiz.

 

Agreed. The division is low on talent right now, best get out after crushing the best of a pretty solid era before losing in a weaker one.. Fury and Joshua are good scraps even if they came a little late, and DuBois is a solid win. A shame he couldn't get Wilder before he was shot.. Still, a loss to Wardley or Kabayel would be worse than if he had lost to AJ or Fury when they fought - regardless of what their many haters would say.

 

He needs to fight more. Anyone can look up boxer's records and see that there were plenty of HW champs that had more than 24 fights with several title defenses and think they should outrank Usyk. If Usyk can beat 2-3 more top contenders than it gets harder to make that argument.

 

Some good points here. I’d say Fury is the biggest key: if he mounts a good comeback, i.e. gets past Makhmudov, then beats Wardley for the WBO, maybe defends it vs. AJ or another good contender, people will re-evaluate Fury’s historical standing as a 3x champion who only ever lost to Usyk, and then of course Usyk’s greatness will go up too.

 

Agreed. He should retire. Having that 0 does a lot for a legacy. Losses while shot and past it shouldn't mean much but they are still losses and it takes luster away. Even if it's just in the eyes of some people.

 

In my view there is not much that Usyk can do to truly diminish his legacy which I think is set in stone

1) if he were to lose, he is old and at a weight above his best
2) he beat the biggest names and best fighters in the division

I understand people being upset with Wilder or Ruiz fights. I think he is entitled to a soft touch. That said, if he fights those guys and stays on a soft touch tour while more deserving guys don't get shots I would be upset if this turns into a trend.

If he faces Wilder or Ruiz then faces Kabayel or Wardley or someone who surpasses them I would be fine with that path and forgive an easy next fight. Plus, retiring champs kill lineages and I would rather see a title change hands in the ring

 

I agree, no real legacy to be gained. No Canelo type out there to pick off a la Mayweather.

He may be posturing and will retire after sitting around. There was a lot of talk from him about how he couldn't box much longer during his last camp.

 

If I was Usyk I would retire he has nothing left to prove.
I don't think beating the likes of Wardley or Kabayel will really enhance his legacy. It would be impressive but not necessary.
