Two of the hardest puncher's in the division .
Both hit like hell, both could be Hurt and Kod.
I don't think it's getting past the fifth round, who ever wins.
    Who takes it?
12 rounds, both at their best.

    Not sure.

Both have fatal defensive flaws against this opponent. Earnie dips to throw his big shots. So he would be down there for that brutal Cooney left uppercut or left hook. He won't absorb the punch.

As for Cooney, he is at 12 o'clock and leans in. Zero head movement. Earnie launches that missile and Cooney is right there for it.

Probably a 2 round fight at best. We just never get these kinds of matches because the loser takes such a big step back.

They were supposed to fight but Gerry pulled out with injury and the Acorn lost to Randall Cobb in a slippery ring at Cobo Hall in Detroit on the undercard of Hearns-Cuevas instead.

Cooney defeats that shopworn version of Earnie.

The Shavers who faced Ali or Norton? I like Earnie by near-decapitation — Gerry stuns him and gets a bit too brave and makes the mistake of wading in to exchange … KO 4.

I’m leaning towards Cooney but not enough to be decided. Both of these men had more than enough fire power to spark out the other. Neither were great at taking it. Both were most dangerous in the early rounds. So I guess the one who gets the other in trouble first is the one who wins. Therein lies the reason I’m slightly in favor of Gerry Cooney. Being the much taller fighter with the reach and fast hands MIGHT enable him to get Earnie caught in a flurry that he can’t get out of. But by no means would I bet money on it. One solid overhand right to Cooney’s chin or temple and it could be all over. No matter who wins I can’t see this going beyond three rounds

Yes, it's one of those where the first person to land solidly could win the fight.

At their absolute best Cooney, but Cooney's absolute best didn't last long. Thus, I would say it is a coin flip.

I think Cooney gets to him first. Shavers isn't that fast and isn't as big as Foreman. Cooney is a bigger Quarry in this sense.
