H2H shouldn't Vitali be top 10

He would have had they fought them. There is every indication late 90s Vitali is among the best heavyweights of that era ability wise. I don't see how he improved subsequently.

By that logic Fury wasn't a top heavyweight in 2024 due to not having scored a significant win in years.

 

Vitali had beaten Hide, Mahone, and Sullivan in 99. He was making noise and starting to get hyped in the U.S.

 

But Fury at least beat someone prior to 2024. Vitali beat nobody at the time. Wouldas don't exist. He fought Byrd a year later and lost. The H2H monster.

 

Why should his wins years earlier have any basis on how he rates in 2024? That's no different than taking what Vitali did subsequently and logically assuming the 1999 version was just as good

Mercer is often rated highly in the 1990s based on tough losses when he has little in the way of good wins.

This is revisionist. Byrd was held in equal or lesser regard than Hide back then.

 

Nonsense. Vitali would appear to be the same fighter in 1999 that he was from 2008 to 2012 if not better.

It's a lot more logical than claiming an aging Fury with no good wins in years coming off the Ngannou debacle was somehow the number 2 heavyweight in the world as if it was still 2015

 

Moreover a lot of the guys being rated above him have at best one win significantly better than Vitalis even going by his 90s run

Fury? What was he, #10??? Did he not have significant wins post 2015?! You think weird. After he put Wilder in place he pole axed Whyte and Chisora in 22 and 23. Whyte was top 5. He was noticeably heavier for the Nanny than he was in those fights and is known for slacking a bit. Do you think he honed himself into the condition he was vs those previous two? His efforts in the two Usyk fights show that, while declining he's still very much a top line fighter. Usyk had put Joshua in his place x 2 and spanked Dubois prior, as well as axing him since.

Fury was very much still a top flight heavyweight. Any fool would realize that. He was still rated #2 by Ring going into this year.

 

Because we're only talking about the 90's. H2H is a made up criteria based on your opinion. Even if you take Vitali's whole career, he lost 2 out of 4 of his biggest fights and didn't prove himself enough against top fighters of his era. According to your logic, if Vitali is Top 10, Ike would need to be Top 5, considering he beat better fighters than Vitali did and never lost.

Wilders reputation is largely based on his losses to Fury. His best win is probably Ortiz who beat Jennings years prior and never scored another win of any consequence. Fury weighed the same for Wilder 2 and 3 that he did for Ngannou. What does that tell you about Wilder?

No idea where Fury would rank. Maybe lower top 10? But a number 2 rating is difficult to justify unless you want to rate him on what he did years prior
