For a short period in 2019, the beltholders were Wilder and Ruiz, with Hunter a top contender. America reigned supreme over the heavyweight division once again, for the first time since the 90's.

However, Miller had just failed another PED test, been denied the Joshua title shot (and in retrospect, a likely victory) and his career as a contender seemed to be over.

Yet as it stands in 2026, there's a strong argument that Miller is the top American heavyweight and has been for the last 3 years. Miller was allegedly ducked by Jared "The Real Big Baby" Anderson last year, 41 year old Chisora opted to fight Wallin instead of Miller, and his winning résumé compares well against his contemporaries:

Washington RTD8
Wach TKO9
Duhaupas UD12
Browne TKO6
Ibeh SD10
Pero UD12

Miller is also a psychological and stylistic threat to Joshua, with superior performances against their mutual opponents: robbed with a 12 round draw against Ruiz rather than being dropped four times and quitting in 7, and (unnecessarily) stopped on his feet in 10 against Dubois rather than getting dropped several times and violently KO'd in 5.

The only other American with an argument is the 14-0 Olympic SHW silver medallist Torrez, but as it stands his most notable win is a 10 round UD over 13-2-1 gatekeeper Vianello.

As uncomfortable as it may be, I'm forced to conclude that Jarrell Miller is indeed America's heavyweight king.

How did Big Baby keep his wig on during the last fight with Andy Ruiz? No way you can go from a Norwood 1 to Norwood 7 in just a year.

Title vacant. America has no heavyweight king.

Torrez will become that guy when he beats Sanchez.

Even if torrez holds a belt most of america still won’t care, none of these american heavyweights are popular.

Miller at 280-300 beats any current US HW.

To be a king you need a kingdom.

If he is the best heavyweight the US can muster then it's a sad day for the US of A.

He may be. He's not bad, really. Funny enough, he very well could've beaten Joshua had he not popped before the fight.

Right now these fighters are all about the same level:

Wilder
Ruiz
Miller
Hunter
Anderson?
Torrez?

No one is clearly better. Gun to my head a game Ruiz and Wilder are still top of the heap, but honestly there isn't much there. You could throw Joshua into that mix while you're at it.

Miller is the gamest of that bunch these days, aside possibly from Torrez.

Joshua-Miller is still a box office fight for me. It should have happened a long time ago. And Miller failing that test seemed a bit too convenient for Hearn/Joshua in my opinion.

Hes a solid gatekeeper, has a great chin.

Nothing he's done leads me to believe he beats AJ unless hes shot to pieces.

He very well could be the best American heavyweight....? I'd like to see him fight Torrez.
