If boxing genuinely wants mass appeal back – like reeling in that football / darts-style casual crowd, it has to adapt to what the modern audience actually is. Schopenhauer nailed it: “If you want to reach a large audience, appeal to idiots.” Harsh as ****, but true. Tech’s locked people into goldfish mode: constant dopamine, endless stimulation, algorithms half-thinking for you. It’s not just social media either; it’s streaming binges, short-form overload, even “reading” now where you can plough through templated clickbait garbage on Kindle Unlimited and call it growth. Pure mental fast food: Pavlovian training for instant hits, speed, payoff. The more you gorge, the shallower you swim, dumber, less patient, convinced you’re leveling up.

If boxing wants the casual crowd to stick around for regular shows, it can’t rely on people appreciating long tactical lulls. They’ll turn up for the circus and the spectacle, then disappear the second it feels like “nothing’s happening.” To win them back, boxing has to borrow what darts does well: simple format, crystal-clear stakes, characters, atmosphere, and minimal dead time. That means either the UFC route (streamline pace/structure, amp stakes, kill lulls) or the WWE route (narrative, characters, drama, spectacle overload). Basically constant jeopardy and action to keep dopamine-wired brains hooked.

Platform doesn’t change the audience pool. Sky is probably the best natural home for “traditional” boxing, but it was bleeding audience elsewhere and there’s no way it pays DAZN-level money, or whatever Netflix might throw around for one-off spectacles. Adapt to the conditioned masses as they are, or keep preaching depth to a world wired for distraction.

Ultimately, if boxing wants mass appeal it needs to sell its soul, which the promoters will have no problem doing as they already do it on a daily basis.

 

I'm not so sure about your last claim because Zuffa haven't had to carve out a space, they fell into a vacuum created by the short sightedness and greed of everyone in boxing apart from a lot of fighters; who are highly p***** with the situation and looking for answers.

Hence the Opetaia signing, which could cause a lot more disaffected fighters to follow him, particularly if Zuffa give him the fights he yearns for. Once a tipping point is reached, the existing mobs will have to negotiate for their futures.

Zuffa may fail too, but are more likely to succeed, considering that the competition pave their way.
