I always had a soft spot for fighters from Ghana. I root for pretty much every Ghanian fighter around the top level, pro or amateur. My first - and still the main - favorite was Ike Quartey. Loved his arogant confidence - as well as the technical style with great physical preparation. Then I was a fan of Josh Clottey. Ike's former sparring partner, who I believe surpassed his master on the defensive side of boxing - just wasn't quite as naturally gifted, strong or imposing. Joseph Agbeko was the next one I followed. I feel that He's very underrated. He lost a close fight to World Class Sydorenko in Germany - and it took him over 3 years to get back on that level. He then destroyed Luis Alberto Perez - 2 division title holder - to win his first title and had a very good run for the next 4 years. He beat Darchinyan when He was at the peak of his career. He was very impressive with his adjustments to avenge decisive loss to Johnny Perez - and was very hard done by the ref in the first Mares fight, where He probably should've been given a nod if all the officials did their job. Very awkward, but effective fighter with sneaky timing. Lately, Agbeko and Commey were also fun to follow for their short spells around the World level. I also had big hopes for Samuel Takyi, after seeing him first in the Olympic qualifiers and then the big tournament itself, but while He's a pro for 3 years now, his career doesn't seem to be moving forward much so He could end up a wasted talent.
Nelson and Ike. I liked Clottey but very frustrating to watch most of the Time. The man just didn't let his hands go!
Azumah Nelson for me watching him live as a youngster on TV the brutal ko of a very good fighter in Pat Cowdell you couldn't not be impressed. Fighting machine, that uppercut on Cowdell, textbook.
I was a huge fan of Ike Quartey from the time he dethroned the tough-as-nails, Crisanto Espana. I attended Quartey-De La Hoya live. Great fight. My wife finally made me get rid of my t-shirt from that fight last year, after wearing it to the gym with 1000 holes in it for ages. But, the Professor is still my #1 by a hair. ATG
Love Azumah, amazing how he pushed Sanchez so close and can never forget his 2nd fight with Fenech. Ike was another favourite, fantastic jab and good puncher. His fights with España,De La Hoya and Jose Luis Lopez are terrific. Huge fan of David Kotey, the way he beat Ruben Olivares in front of his roaring fans was a tremendous result. Find a copy of his dismantling of Shig Fukuyama (recently stopped Danny Lopez) was brutal. Oddly enough lost his title (taking tremendous amount of punishment) against Lopez at home.
Joshua Clottey …I love his style …I watched his fight with Antonio Margarito …and I was a fan ever since
