Would Terence Crawford overwhelm Sugar Ray Robinson ? (boxing evolution theory)

Why?

 

I would favor Robinson.

However.... I'm unaware of any counter puncher Robinson faced on Crawford's level. Most of the fighters he faced on the film we have were front foot lead fighters. Maybe one day AI will be good enough to make reliable fantasy fight predictions...

WB, you're a unique one - the only fighter that I consistently see you give praise to from that era is SRR, but then you will provide almost exclusively negative commentary on previous past greats who actually achieved/did more in the ring than later fighters.

I concur though - at WW, primed and focused, fighters like Crawford and PBF may survive but they don't win a 15 rounder. I actually think there's more chance of Robbi catching them clean and KOing them than many might care to admit.

 

Probably Robinson at 147* and Crawford at 168.

That is not true. In terms of greatness, I have many of my top 10 from that era: SRR, Greb, Armstrong, Louis, Duran, Langford, Pep. Charles, Mayweather, Pacquiao. But that is cause when I assess greatness, I judge them based on how good they were and what they achieved in their own era, plus the impact they had on the sport.
But when it comes to who is better, or who would win hypothetical h2h fights, I just look at peak form, and it's obvious just with the eye test that modern boxers (post 1970s) are generally better.
SRR is the only one of the old timers who I also praise in hypothetical h2h scenarios cause he's the only one who looks great on camera and was far ahead of his time, a complete boxer.

Yes, head to head is purely speculative. Some of us are here to learn and share actual facts, not wild-eyed prognostications.

 

There’s lots of old fighters who look great on camera.

 

I think then that you may very well be missing out on the brilliance of a Charles, Jofre, Pep, Armstrong, Saddler, Ortiz, Gavilan, Benny Leonard, Ross, Canzoneri, McLarnin, Tunney etc.

There's a fair amount of guys pre 1970 that I would favour over many of today's/later great fighters with a same day weigh in, 15 rounds requirement.

Not as good as SRR. Louis looks great when he punches, but his footwork not so much.
