I remember him being a highly skilled, slick talented boxer. What do you guys remember of him? He was a champion.
I remember him carving up the Korean chap for his first title when I was just a wee lad. Watched the replay on Foxtel one night.
Casamayor was very strong in his prime. A southpaw, fast, with good timing, accuracy, elusiveness, and a skilled counterpuncher. He went 2-1 against Chico Corrales, and, in my opinion, the Cuban didn't deserve the loss against either Freitas and Castillo. I can't understand why Corrales is in the IBHOF but Casamayor isn't. I hope El Cepillo is inducted soon.
Good to be back from my suspension from the forum. Missed ya'll. Ah yes, El Cepillo Casamayor. Was undefeated until running into PoPo Freitas. Fought the who's who in his division. Had a fine trilogy with Corrales
I still remember seeing the Katsidis bout live from way later in his career. Sharp & super skilled even then.
I remember him for his war with Acelino Freitas, he is the first to exposed the Brazilian champion who was very impressive at this period.
He was like all the good stereotypes of Cuban boxers (slick, accurate) with almost none of the bad (dirty/boring). Big fan of The Brush.
Nevertheless, in his time end of 90's-beggin of 2000's there were a lot of people in the Super Featherweight/Lightweight divisions. Artur Grigorian, Joel Casamayor, Acelino Freitas, Julien Lorcy, Jean-Baptiste Mendy, Floyd Mayweather, Marco Antonio Barrera, Orzubek Nazarov, Takanori Hatakeyama, Lakva Sim (the only Mongolian world champion), Djamel Lifa, Diego Corrales, Erik Morales, Juan Diaz, Carl Crook... There is so many and talented forgotten champions here, it's difficult to say who is the most talented, even the only France level at the end of the 90's in Lightweight was particularly high : Djamel Lifa, Julien Lorcy, Jean-Baptiste Mendy, Angel Mona, Christian Merle, Abdel Jebahi, Jean Nicolas Weigel, Charles Baou... that was damn crazy to have all of this fighters from France at the same moment.
I fondly remember Casamayor. Terrific boxer and my favorite boxers from Cuba outside of Jose Napoles, Luis Manuel Rodriguez and Kid Gavilan. Silky smooth technician yet also fun to watch. His fights with Freitas, Campbell, Corrales, Castillo, Katsidis and JMM were fantastic. Really wish he had a shot against FMJ, he would have made it a very interesting fight even if it was hard to envision seeing him win. He also had a fight lined up against Joan Guzman at one point as well but that fell through.
