Most Overrated trainers/coaches?

Probably Cus D'Amato. He only trained three world champs across a very length career but gets the lion's share of the credit for prime Mike Tyson even though that was primarily the tutelage of Kevin Rooney. Jose Torres was a good champion, as was Floyd Patterson (even if the latter had his career aided by Cus' connections and managing immensely), but I don't think either wouldn't have done about as well if they had trained with any of plenty of other trainers around at the time. Patterson very likely would have done better with more of a boxer-mover kind of style imo.

 

I knew Dundee and Cus and Steward would all be first page.

Some good points here in fairness.

Although, I felt Cus D'Amato did a top job in developing Mike Tyson into a very programmed fighter whom he knew how to make the most of what his strengths and weaknesses was. Also, had D'Amato still been alive - I suspect he would have kept Mike Tyson focused and in his prime for longer, and away from Don King and off the ring issues.

 

Notice a lot of people are mentioning Manny Steward was overrated, I don't think thats the case. He trained Lennox and Vitali into top top fighters.

Although, I do feel that Sugar Hill Steward is quite overrated, is kind of living off the Steward name - and I've not really been impressed by his fighters recently.

 

Cus was a fine boxing manager and interesting guru/Svengali ‘boxer whisperer,’ but he was not the trainer he is credited to be.

Dan Florio was Floyd Patterson’s trainer in his pro career through Liston II. Floyd trained at Stillman’s Gym, not at Cus’s place in the Catskills, as a pro.

Teddy Atlas trained Tyson as an amateur. Kevin Rooney trained him as a pro.

 

This is the biggest scandal this forum has seen a long time.

 

I don’t buy the “Cus would’ve kept Mike focused” narrative. Tyson was a party guy, with unlimited wealth and hype surrounding him. Sitting around at home talking about Jack Dempsey with an 80 year old isn’t as exciting as people think (and certainly not like it was for Tyson as a teenager) and Tyson would’ve gotten into womanising, drugs and partying with or without Cus being alive. It was in his nature and the wealth and fame exacerbated this.

Ben Davison seems very knowedgeable on boxing. And has has numerous world champions working with him.. Leigh Wood, Fabio Wardley, Josh Taylor, Billy Joe Saunders, Tyson Fury, Devin Haney, Anthony Joshua

Don't think so many top boxers would be hiring him if he was a glorified PT.

Good call.

Lou was quite a character and a great hype man but George Benton was the brains of that training duo.

I’m sure Lou had his value in helping to build up a fight (he did a lot of the press) and was probably good for organizing camps and having connections that helped the Duva promotional clan make good matches and bring in talent, but I don’t know of cases where he positively impacted the game plans or development of their boxers.
