Would James Toney have struggled with Joe Calzaghe?

I agree with you …Calzaghe’s best chance is to outwork Toney with his volume…this one has controversial decision written all over it

At 168 Toney was at his best. I think Toney wins this one by decision. He would land the more powerful cleaner blows.

At their best, I would back Toney. The problem was that he was a bit erratic.

 

Calzaghe hasn’t really faced anyone like him, whereas you could sayToney has he’s faced tricky, slick, high-volume southpaws. Calzaghe’s defense wasn’t very good, and against Toney, I can see him getting dropped.

 

Calzaghe would beat Toney.

History pretty much tells us he would, because Toney was involved in a few close and controversial decisions where he was lazy during fights. Don’t forget the Jones and Griffin losses either.

Toney had serious issues with busy, awkward, fast-handed fighters. Fact.

I’d even go as far to say that Calzaghe is up there with the worst styles in boxing history that Toney could face.

 

I have every bias for Toney here and I assume Calzaghe slaps into a win, outhustling James significantly enough the more likely the conclusion than Toney sharpshooting easily with Calzaghe being too sloppy to really do anything about it. I'm not saying it couldn't turn into the opposite, and I assume there would be some rounds and several exchanges that you'd be able to isolate that would look exactly like that, the way I see it playing out, but ultimately I just outright assume a points win for Joe. And I don't even think he could deal out as much physical punishment as multiple guys who've lost to James already but it's just going to be a matter of scoring those points in the eyes of the judges. I don't think it's likely Toney would score a points win or a KO win. Hell, I damn near think a KO win is more likely if JT gets it. Almost.

 

Joe would win a comfortable decision via handspeed and high workrate slaps. He wasn't stationary enough for Toney to get enough going to win.

 

This is almost exactly what I wanted to say and that’s definitely the first time I’ve ever thought that about a @Boxed Ears post!

 

Toney did knock out Nunn an at that time, there weren’t many more awkward fast handed an fast footed fighters than the unbeaten Nunn.
