You put it the most aptly. Qawi has the wrong style to take on a beast like Bonavena. Too strong, tough, durable and hard-hitting.

If he were to fight a HW of that era he would be better off tackling Jimmy Ellis, Leotis Martin or even George Chuvalo. Bonavena, Frazier and Foreman would be three to steer miles clear from.

I don't think as highly of Qawi as others do on this forum. Excellent fighter who wouldn't have been fun for many LHWs in history, but not the beast some here make him out to be. A few guys once even suggested that he would KO Joey Maxim (something Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivins, Jersey Joe Walcott, Bob Satterfield and countless others failed to do).

 

Yes, but I think he would do better against the lighter-hitting Chuvalo than Bonavena. Qawi's inside game was clever enough to give Chuvalo a nice tussle for awhile, imo.

 

Yeah, a big and strong guy, but you never often saw him hurt and/or floor top level heavyweights much. Bonavena battered and floored Frazier, staggered Ali badly and hurt various others. Opponents often spoke of Bonavena's power. I don't hear them talk about Chuvalo's much.

 

Possible tough fight for both men. I like Oscar here tho.

I’m sure Qawi would be game and have some good moments. But Bonavena might be a bridge too far to cross.

 

The size gap isn't too hig Qawi wins

 

Bonavena is noticabely bigger.

At 190lbs, Qawi very much could win though.
