Where does Roy Jones Jnr sit among the All time Greats?

In his prime to top 15 for sure. If he retired after the his first fight with Tarver and did not get disqualified against Griffin he would of started his career 50-0

 

Had he retired after the Ruiz fight many would've seen him as a top 10 P4P fighter of all time. He barely showed any weaknesses and dominated world class fighters like they were nothing.

His record would've been 23-1 in world title fights whilst barely losing a round in the process, he would've been seen as one the most dominant boxers of all time.

The losses ruined his aura and record and he's dropped down the rankings significantly because of it.

But i still say for what he did in his prime he's still in the top 25 for me.

 

He's top 10 for sure

 

Jones record up to Heavyweight is up there with any fighter in history,Jones was the most dominant fighter of this time without equal. 48-1 with the loss being a DQ,Ring fighter of the year 1994,WBHOF fighter of the year 2003,3 time winner best boxer ESPY award 1996,2000,2003,Boxing Writers Association and Sporting News fighter of the decade 1990s,most wins in history for unified LHW title bouts with 12,first former middleweight in 106 years to win a Heavyweight Title . All of his losses coming after 50 fights and being over 35 years old (not inc DQ).Then it went downhill fast after the win over Ruiz at Heavyweight .

 

I don’t see why his later losses should lower his all time rating, if at all.
He just wanted to carry on boxing.
We don’t lower someone like Duran for not having the legs to get near Leonard in their third fight.
I don’t really get it. He was clearly miles better than Hopkins or Tarver in his prime, which is what should matter.
He was still on top at 34, which is pretty good for anyone but particularly someone who ‘had no fundamentals and only fought on athleticism’

Prime, Not Prime, If ,Would've, Could've, Should've.....

As per usual in every Jones thread. Unfortunately boxing and sport and life doesn't work like that. It's not a fantasy and you can't turn back the clock.

 

Surely Prime is the most relevant especially if it’s not a short prime?
Where would we rank someone like Pacquaio who got knocked out several times and outboxed quite a few times before the age Roy started losing? No one could touch prime Roy.

Hagler got outboxed or struggled with guys like Antuofermo.
Where do you put them, top 500?

 

I think it all depends on how much weight you give the whole 'Roid Jones' thing.

How much of his 'Superman' feats was ped related, and how much of it wasn't?

Very hard to say, but achievement wise he is up there and H2H P4P in his prime (PEDS or not) he's about as untouchable is I've seen in my lifetime - I mean shutout James Toney 12-0???? wtf nobody does that!

Crazy athleticism, unique skillset.. Jones was a freak.. but his fall off was very sharp .. unlike other greats like Moore, Pac, Duran, Holyfield etc who sustained form better.. Roy fought Ruiz & never really got his swag back.. i also think (whether u think he wins or not) it matters that he never fought his era rival Dariusz too.. H2H historically hes a nightmare for anyone but i don't put him alongside men like Charles, Walker, Pep etc.. but definitely would be in a top 50 all time if i had one.

 

The OP asked in his prime. Was Roy in his prime against Greeny? Was he a 27 year old in prime, son of a legend, counrty hero that got whooped consecutively? Show us some videos of that. LOL
