Who is the face of boxing? There is no face of boxing atm

God help us, Jake Paul.

 

If you asked most people on the street what current fighter was the "face" of boxing ... the face they think of when the word boxing is mentioned ...

You probably wouldn't be happy with the answer.

I don't care how much Zuffa is offering the welterweight beltholders ... they are all an assortment of powder-puff punchers who can't knock anyone out.

This sport needs an overhaul, fast.

It needs active, big-punching heavyweights. Fighting on the regular. Champs fighting four times a year. Contenders fighting six times a year, every other month. They need guys in their 20s. They need televised bouts held in the hometowns of those fighters, regardless of the country or the state, so we can see the local fans pulling for them.

Build excitement.

You don't have to reinvent the wheel. It's happened before. It's a winning formula. Whatever is happening now, IS NOT a winning formula.

That means they also NEED TO STOP with the eight-hour televised cards with a dozen to 14 people boxing. Pick four guys. Match them evenly. Put on a solid broadcast with profiles of all, so we get to know the stories of the two guys. A nice, tight two hours.

Do it again the next week, or the next day. (Saturday and Sunday) And the week after.

Nobody wants to tune in at 3 p.m. and watch until 11 at night. Even if a fight is great, the three boring fights after that kill the momentum.

I used to wish they showed more undercard fights. Now I know why TV never did until recently. It's mind-numbingly boring. And I like boxing. I have for 50 years. But spread it out so there's something interesting to see every weekend. Or twice on the weekends.

They used to show fights every Saturday and Sunday in the 70s and 80s. Usually in the afternoon. Most shows were 90 minutes to two hours. It was perfectly fine. And everyone got used to and familiar with all the fighters.

More active fighters on shorter, well-produced broadcasts.

Less is more, sometimes, and that's definitely the case with the eight-hour cards.

 

The only face of boxing is the sport itself. Never believed this whole "face of boxing" crap. Every era is gonna have a great fighter but they're not the ones that run boxing.
