Well, here is an interesting thing to debate. It seems that the saying goes that offense wins fans over. However, it is also said that defense wins championships. In boxing, the first part seems to hold true. But when it comes down to winning the belt and becoming a champion, is it offense or defense that wins the day?

Defense. Your offensive game can be subpar as long as the other guy cant hit you with any regularity. Everyone can have good offense the same cant be said for Defense

Well, here's an interesting way of doing this

(top 10 of ring magazines 80 best fighters of last 80 years)

    1 Sugar Ray Robinson (offense)
    2 Henry Armstrong (offense)
    3 Muhammad Ali (offense)
    4 Joe Louis (offense)
    5 Roberto Duran (offense)
    6 Willie Pep (defense)
    7 Harry Greb (offense)
    8 Benny Leonard (defense)
    9 Sugar Ray Leonard (offense)
    10 Pernell Whitaker (defense)

make of that what you will.

Your offense/defense designations are pretty arbitrary.

By defense u mean a counter puncher defense everytime, sluggers always end up getting picked off once they meet a world class counter!

Well, I could only pick one or the other, so I went with what I felt the fighters in question were better known for. Mileage may vary.

Attacking fighters should get the nod, even if they take slightly more punishment than a defensive fighter.

Calzaghe - BHop the perfect example. It wouldve been criminal to give BHop the decision for doing **** all for 70% of the fight, whereas Joe was jabbing away all night, apart from when that breeze blew him over.

The best defense is a good offense. The list says it all.

it depends mostly on the skillset, some are just that naturally gifted when it comes to offense or defense vice versa but i favor defense more
